Haida Gwaii Deer Rigs and Loads

Anyone ever hear of the .224 60gr Partition.My Dad shot a dozen Ontario Wt's using a 55gr Win bulk/ cannalure bullet and 3 black bears over 24gr of Win 748 out of a .222 Rem .One shot per customer......never had a bullet fail or lost an animal.Use whatever you want as you don't eat the lungs.

I shoot the 60 Partition from my .223 and .22-250, never on a deer, but on a few coyotes and the bullet seems to expand nicely based on exit holes... does a good job and does not make too big a mess.

Born and raised not far from there although we called it something else, my post was thick with sarcasm, was hoping it was obvious

Thanks shell shucker, looking forward to playing with some loads

No worries conor. It should be noted that the Sierra SMP is a varmint bullet, but at the listed speeds, they'll open up without coming apart on shots to the heart/lung zone. The Speer 70 gr is the one to use for a shoulder shot. On deer the size you're gonna hunt, don't be surprised to find both shoulders taken out with a well lined up shot.

The loads I gave ye are from the Lyman book.

Here's a few from the Speer #11 manual for the 70 gr bullet.

* 19.5 gr IMR 4198 = 2548 fps
* 25.0 gr Win 748 = 2607 fps -------These velocities are with 18.5 " barrel.
* 24.0 gr IMR 4320 = 2659 fps

Happy huntin';)

Think federal loads the trophy bonded tipped in 223. Not sure if its offered as a component yet.
Seems like an ideal hunt for a pistol cal carbine like a 41 mag or 10mm auto

Federal fusion 223 factory ammo from a 16 inch barrel (Troy PAR) worked fine for me on my last trip over there. Will be shooting the same ammo from my CZ 527 next time (I sold the PAR). I don't expect any issues.

So I have a local store ordering some of the Nosler bsb for me, I will also cook up a load with the woodleigh 7.62x39 bullets.

It’s a shame but I think I will scope the cz with a 2-7, too bad high rings will probably be a necessity

I'm debating a rifle for this exact same purpose, having just moved to Prince Rupert.

that said, I'm debating between a .30-30 lever or a CZ 527 in 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel or .300 Blackout.

Id go 6.5 Grendel of those options, better trajectory and all the killing power you'll need.

Hey I was thinking of bringing my m92 454 casull! What does your reloading book say about that one suther?

:rolleyes:

When are you planning your hunt mr friendly?

I can’t say enough good stuff about the 527 absolutely love mine, wish there were more opportunities for it to be practical up here or that I could have afforded one when I lived on VI

I've shot a few whitetails with a .223 and .22-250, one of my favorite bullets if it shoots well is the 60 grain Nosler partition, I suspect the 64 grain bonded solid base they offer would be very nearly as good but haven't played with it yet. After that some cup and cores that have worked for me are the 64 grain winchester Power Point, 65 grain Gameking, and 55 grain Hornady SP with cannelure and sierra gameking. If you shooting factory the Federal fusions have done well for me both in accuracy and performance. I can't comment on the 75 grain bullets but the Barnes TSX or TTSX are certainly not a bad choice I have yet to play with them.

For your 8mm I'd be inclined to use the 150 grain Hornady interlock or 170 SST, I do not know if the Nosler Ballistic tip is meant for the faster 8's or if the original would give good performance on deer. Perhaps another poster will know.
