Does anyone have any suggestions for getting some game hides tanned with the hair on, preferably in Canada? I've tried it DIY a couple of times, and found it way too time-consuming and energy-intensive, and it produced mediocre results for me, at best. An interesting project to try for fun, but the fun I had was more than enough. :) I also had a caribou hide done by an outfit in Ontario, and after waiting almost 2 years I got back a nicely-done pelt, but definitely NOT the one I had brought in.

There must be someone who tans the pelts in a reasonable length of time and actually gives you back the same hide you took in. Any ideas are appreciated.

I once brain-tanned a rabbit hide. Now I know how, but someone else will do my next one. Too much work to to when I already have too much work to do.

I have sent my Bison Hide to International Fur in Winnipeg. The quality was very good. I use it now for a robe, it is that soft and warm.

Thanks for this outstanding tip, a very convenient location for me. Do you feel that you got the pelt you sent in? Getting a random caribou hide (no matter how nicely tanned), rather than the one I sent in to the Ontario tannery, was and remains a major piss-off for me.

I hear you on that. I could not believe the intensive work required to work and stretch the hide. Never again!

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

International does a good job. What you can do, and what a lot of taxidermists do, is to take something pointy and imprint a number or your initials in the hide on the back side through the leather before you take it there, it'll show up after tanning and this way you know it's your hide.
