Well first of all I'm a S&W guy at heart. Owned a few Rugers revos (GP's, Sixes, Redhawks) but always sold them in favor of the Smith's (still have a convertible .22 Single Six tho). I recently found a half lug GP100 locally and couldn't resist, the price was right, the revolver was mint with less than 300 rounds since new and the older gentleman was the original owner. Came with factory wood panel grips, extra finger grooved Pachmayr's, owner's manual and a few rounds left in a box. The older gentleman had bought it new in 1989, the serial shows that it was manufactured in 1988. I've never seen a half lug GP100 up here, knew that Ruger made some in the first few years of production but this version is limited.

Off the bat I found that it handles superbly, makes me remember how my K frames Smith's handled. I sold my last M66-1 after a steady diet of hot 125gr magnums (probably north of 2k rounds), the M66 developed some top strap/forcing cone erosion that didn't look good at the time so it went and so did my magnum K frames buying/shooting/collecting envy.

So I went to the range last Friday to try it out and brought along my no dash M586 for a side by side comparo. Had a couple hundred rounds of various types of ammo (wadcutters, +P's, magnums and very hot magnums reloads). Now, the double action on the GP100 is a bit stiffer than on my M586 although the M586 had a few thousands rounds through it plus an action job, the Ruger is really not that bad, as a matter a fact, I found the DA action on the Ruger to be more predictable (à la Python) which I personally like. The single action is just about the same, light and crisp. Accuracy was ex aequo, both revolvers doing sub 2" groups with wadcutters at 25 meters of the bench. After about 30 rounds through the 586 it went back in the case and the rest of the ammo went through the Ruger. Rapid DA drills at the 40 yards gongs ended with "pings" every time, it's so much lighter in hand, balances much better than the full lug L frames. This guy will last a lifetime shooting a steady diet of magnums. It won't replace any of my N frames S&W's or any Pythons but as a dedicated workhorse .357, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one!

I like it a lot, compared the lockup with my L frames, N frames and Colt Pythons. It's tighter than the Smiths, very close to the bank vault like lockup of the Pythons. Definitely a very sturdy and tight revolver. Now, the only thing left to do to sweeten the pot is to put some Wolff springs in it and polished the action a tad.

Here's a side-side picture with my M586:

Harry are you moving over to the Dark Side?

LOL not a chance! Still hanging on to my S&W's, Dan Wessons and Colts original thinking but got this one for "cheap" compared to the going prices on the other makers in used condition. I was ready to put it up for sale if it didn't live up to my expectations but since I'm very impressed with it and the fact that all the other Rugers I had in the past are gone, well except for that Single Six convertible, I had to come forward and tell you guys about it.

The GP100 is an amazing revolver. I had one, and loved it. In fact, sometines I regret ever getting rid of it. It's built like a tank. You only realize how tough they are built when put it side by side with a S&W.

Enjoy you ruger.

Good on you Harry! I love my Smiths and Colts too, but my first revolver was a full lug 4.2" GP100, and it is still one of my favorite to shoot. It's my only Ruger, but a guy has to have at least one. I love that half lug look on yours, quite a nice score I'd say. I'm not surprised you like it, I prefer shooting mine to my 686, though I still have a sweet spot for my M66.....

I hear you TC. Loved how the K frame handled but since they can't hold a steady diet of hot magnums without showing abnormal and possibly dangerous wear, I turned my last model 66 away. Now this beast handles just like a K frame even if it's a tad heavier plus the fact that it will eat a diet of "magnums only" ammo all day and every day, what's not to like.

Nice review, congrats on the purchase. The newer GP100 "Match Champion" is also half-lug, and my favourite gun for introducing new shooters to the sport with some light .38 special handloads (have some hot .357M recipes too of course LOL). Added a spring kit that lightens up the DA nicely, while still remaining very consistent.

Looks just like the security six I had years ago....got rid of it after 50 rounds.....I'm a smith guy as well and absolutely hate the little button you push to open the cylinder.....too use to the smith's....couldn't adjust
