Half lug GP100

Harry check your cylinders. Rugers are famous for tight cylinders. MY GP-100 had three cylinders a .356 bullet would not pass through and three that prevented a .357 bullet pass. I had them reamed to .358 and now the gun shoots lead like a laser. You can also shim the hammer and trigger (the Matrch Chapion comes shimmed).

I prefer the trigger on my GP-100 over my 686.

Thanks Bob. Heard about tight cylinders issues on Rugers. I didn't know if the early production revolvers suffered from this so I did inspect the revolver prior to purchase and all chambers are into specs. The gun shoots beautifully, on par with my '83 no dash 586 which translates to sub 2" groups at 25 meters with wadcutters and opens up a little with full power magnum 158's SWC. All in all I'm very impressed with it.
 
Good to hear. I have a US Customs 105.14MM restricted 686 to match my 4.2" GP-100. The GP-100's do represent good value and excellent examples show up on EE regularly. The guns just chew up 38spl rounds and will handle anything anyone would want to shoot via a .357mag. I am caught between chasing a Match Champion and getting another pistol. Decisions decisions.

You might want to look at getting hammer and trigger shims for the gun. I do think it helps take the trigger oull to a higher level.

I hear you Bob. Both trigger and hammer rub very slightly on the left side, shims would indeed help to line up the hammer and smoothed trigger pull. Spring may also help a bit. The Vs. Match Champion comparo, if your GP100 is already tuned I don't think it will be an upgrade for you depending how you compete with your gun. Your cyl. chambers are already up to specs, the MC may need some opening there if you shoot a lot of lead. Only real benefits are front F/O sight and factory grip, you can find better aftermarket grips for you stock revolver and changing front sight is one of the most easy thing to do on the GP100 anyway. The only thing missing is the half lug bbl... That you can't readily cope with on your gun but a good smith would be able to shed some weight off your full underlug pretty easely, if competition regulations permits that's what I would do.
 
I did not shoot mine yet but so impress by the sweet trigger i bought another one for my wife birthday at a ridiculous low price... Those Ruger are very close to the Smith... JP.
 
Very nice looking revolver. They made some 4" fixed sight half lugs as well. It apparently was a popular model with Cdn LE. I wish they'd make something like that in 4.2".
