Halifax NS area which club to join

The guys at AMA are a good bunch of guys to shoot with if you like primarily handguns. I belonged to both AMA and NSRA at one point and if you've got the time and inclination to actually shoot, then join both. Support your local clubs.

With work and family committments I find it hard to get out as often as I'd like. I joined the West Pictou Wildlife Federation and use their rifle range. You can go alone and you'll never have an isuue waiting. There's hardly anyone there when I go.

For the last few years our annual handgun championship has been the PPC 1500 match. It's been run as an "open" match so that members of other clubs can also shoot if they wish.

Sounds interesting,....so the matches are only a few times are year? I think I remember seeing a schedule on the internet somewhere:confused:,..but lost the link.

Why repeat a rumor if you only think it is just that? Your instinct is correct, though. The rumor is bulls**t.

Because it came from a member who said centre fire handgun shooting had been suspended because the neighbours had kicked up a stink about the roof not being able to stop bullets. If this were true, it may impact a person's decision to join therefore it would be something worth sharing. That's why I didn't come out and state it as fact.

And I did not say it was a rumor or that I believed it was a rumor, only that it came from a member of AMA.

I did not intend to turn this into a "my club is best" thread. I only posted my opinion. The only negative thing I said about your club is that it is a gravel pit...IMO. The feeling I got when I was at the Dunn range was that it felt as if I were shooting in an enclosed area. Like a bulldozer had carved the ranges into the ground. NSRA felt wide open and the grounds seemed to be kept better. Little things but it did make the difference for me. Like I said the biggest part of my decision had to do with shooting alone. I work shiftwork so finding someone on a Tuesday afternoon to accompany me to the range was a pain. And YES, you can shoot alone at the NSRA.

Nothing against your club, I was just giving my 2 cents. Maybe Burrahobbitt will like AMA better. I don't care which club he joins. Both would be the ideal situation depending on money.

But I do like the sounds of the club in New Minas. 24 hour access:)

Alright, consider the axe buried.

Because it came from a member who said centre fire handgun shooting had been suspended because the neighbours had kicked up a stink about the roof not being able to stop bullets.

I'd appreciate the name of that member (PM is fine) so I can correct him. That's so far from reality that it really needs to be corrected.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive through the countryside, you could also consider the Musquodoboit Valley Rifle and Revolver Club:

http://www.mvrifleandrevolverclub.com/

Lots of ranges, shoot any time and alone (once you have the safety brief), very relaxed environment, cheap rates. Good bakery and restaurant nearby. ;)
