yeah, I know, hammer bite on a 1911? I bought a SAM 1911 Commander in .45 off the EE back in September, but never had a chance to shoot it until now.

the hammer is slamming into the beavertail which then slaps into the meaty part between my trigger finger and thumb and hurts like a sunovabeech!

any thoughts on how to fix that?

Just off the top of my head, does the resistance on the recoil spring seem light when you pull back on the slide? Despite the 50 bazillion people who tell you "I've never needed to replace the recoil spring!" they do wear out.

Use a standard 1911a1 beavertail in place of the commander one. Will need fitting for the round hammer.

I would think that filing a bit off the hammer, or off the beavertail would alleviate the issue, but I don't want to do anything that's not reversible.

an sjf, I was wearing gloves while shooting. it was a chilly 5C (pouring rain) or so at the range.

Is it a spur hammer? Or a combat....spurs can be a touch long...if you have a high hold you're in the danger zone.....
