Just heard about this story....on BCTV....

"Teen blows hand off ringing in the new year

A Surrey teenager is in hospital after losing his hand in a bizarre New Year’s Eve celebration near 165th Street and 88th Avenue.
News 1130 reported that the boy decided to shoot an old-style musket into the air to ring in the new year. But the gun exploded in his hand, ripping it off and sending shrapnel into four friends. "

is there a moral here ? firearms are not toys ??
 
Knowing the news, their moral is probably that guns are dangerous and can explode at random...

I wonder if it was too large a powder charge, or an old khyber pass jezail "gun"? With the way reporters do things it could easily be a metal cap gun they packed pull of fireworks..
 
Booze + guns = bad

I feel bad someone hurt themselves, but this sounds like someone who just did not

-a./ know what they were doing

-b./ respect their weapon

I just hope this has no fall out with the reinacting community! We are legislated enough as it is.
 
sounds like the moron put smokeless down he pipe instead of blackpowder.

as they say. stupidity is its own reward.
 
Kid was an idiot, but I'm generally of the opinion that no one deserves to lose a hand for this kind of mistake. I can also recognize though, that these kind of consequences are inherent when making mistakes when handling firearms.

My 2 cents, who cares about the rifle, they come and go, guy isn't gonna have his hand for the rest of his life.

Well to bad for the Stupid Kid! i dont think looseing a hand is a good thing no matter how it happens.
thats and expensive life lesson thats for sure.


I just hope that the 5 by standers hit and injured with shrapnel dont make a big deal about this.
 
Given how badly the news is on the side of sensationalism first and liberalism second there's nothing good going to happen here.

Sad about the kid's hand but thanks to my expectations for highly inaccurate news reporting we'll likely never know what the real story is. Only that the reporter had a mission to point out the folly of owning guns of any sort.

Perhaps if the kid had recieved some gun handling experience at an even younger age his respect for the power of the powder and some common sense would have taken hold before the thing went BANG in his hand.
 
Does anybody here know the real story? Maybe the kids were fooling around with something they knew little of, or maybe the kid did have some previous experiance with firearms, but to just say @#$& his hand is a little premature don't you think?

Yup, it's sad, anybody who didn't do some stupid #### as a kid had a boring childhood. This kid just didn't get away with his. I'm guessing smokeless powder like the dealer said at the beginning of the thread.
 
For sure they used white powder.
I can just hear one of the friends telling him to put more in it'll be cooler.

I let my son ring in the new year with a 112 year old 30-30.
I was right beside him as it should be and it was the first time he'd shot anything bigger than a 22.
He liked it of course and now I'm going to let him try my Sharps rifles.
 
Look.. Nowadays kids don't receive any education in school and in most homes about anything, especially guns. I'm sorry for that kid. He may not be stupid, just uneducated about the dangers of firearms and explosives/propellants. It won't happen around my house where every kid will know better!

Now, if one CGN guy tried to load a zinc gun with smokeless powder, I would call him stupid as he should know better!
