Breitkreuz sent out a collection of letters to the editor on the incident, today. One was from a person claiming to be a close friend of the victim. The victim is described as being in his 20s and the gun seems to be described as being one that the family had shot for a number of years. It is claimed that the gun was loaded properly and that blanks were being shot.
In spite of all of the above and speaking as someone who has shot a lot of originals, I have to suspect that there was either something drastically wrong with the gun or with the loading and that if it was with the gun, the owners must have been oblivious to the problem. Based on gun blowups reported in other locations, I would wonder if smokeless powder was involved, or if the gun was one of those made in India with no touch hole drilled or if some wadding was left part way down the barrel during the loading. I am guessing that the burst was in mid barrel.
It still comes back to a lack of accurate information on what actually happened.

One thing IS for sure, regardless of WHY it blew up, he had no business firing that gun in a city, after dark, presumably been drinking, etc. Unfortunate for sure that it did blow up and he lost his hand, but, if he had been using common sense in the first place it never would have happened. Did he figure it was the wild, wild west or something?
NewYears eve , booze , a party , having fun and deciding to add to the bangs going off all over to mark the occasion.
Went bad , sadly.

imho, I enjoy black powder, and when I learned as a novice, it was at the Saskatoon Muzzle Loaders club with guys who were older and senior to me at the time.
With this story, there seems not only to be a lack of respect for firearms, but an extra disrespect for muzzle loaders, which might be "primitive" but not simpler, as one has not only to understand the firearm, but one has to be competent on the load, as it is no longer a case of just putting in the right cartridge. Almost all of the muzzle loading enthusiasts that I know of already had years of experience with regular firearms before getting into black powder, and not the other way around. Regards.

I see allot of people saying the kid was drinking, where is the proof of that? Nowhere in the article does it say the kid was drinking....

And you should have enough empathy to realize that a guy who has seen his hand turned to hamburger probabley does not need to hear advice given from smug quarters.
Wait till your disabled (which is enevitable)and I bet I can find a reason to blame You for it.

I seriously doubt the fault was with the firearm, I have seen some muskets in quite poor condition shot by experienced men quite safely with blank loads.
Im thinking bore obstruction, or smokeless....
Or just plain old fashioned stupid....Its all hearsay unfortunately..I said it onece and Ill say it again, I feel real bad for the kid!
