I just got a new mold for my .44 mag. I made up a bunch of bullets and I notice that the base of the bullet is smaller than the lands above it. Is this made for gas checks or can it be loaded like any other bullet? I hope so cause I dont want to do gas checks.

molds

Yes it is for gas check. I am looking for a mold if you want to sell. I have some molds that are not gas check if you are interested in straight up trades. Are yours single or multible molds. Ken

Yes, that would be a gas-check design. You can use those bullets without a GC if you keep the pressure low (starting cast loads) and you won't have a problem with leading.

It sounds like you've got a mold that makes bullets designed for gas checks. I can't say whether you can shoot them without them or not. Probably yes, but I'm not the guy to ask about doing it in a 44 mag. What we need is either a picture of the bullets it's making, or a name of the mold manufacturer and number of the mold your using to know 100% for sure without seeing the bullets.

Edit: Ken and Andy beat me to it. :D

If using mod. to heavy loads, the gas check will prolly be more accurate, and cleaner shooting, that's why all bullets meant for higher vel. are gas checked. Still far cheaper then j-word bullets. If you want a good design for the .44 without a gas check, i can recommend the Lyman #429421 a 245 gr., designed originally by Elmer Keith, though changed somewhat for ease of casting(rd. gr. instead of square).

If you happen to have a lathe with a 4 jaw chuck handy its straightfroward to machine out the last ring in the mold. If not it will work fine for lower powered loads. Just find some gas checks if you want to use the same bullets in a hotter load.
