If you use skateboard tape, you need to learn to let your wrist and arm absorb the recoil rather than trying to keep your wrist rigid. If you keep your wrist rigid to absorb recoil, the gun tends to try and rotate in your hand and the skateboard tape, (similar to #50 sandpaper) tends to "soften"
There are references/instructions for applying the tape to grips. I have a 1911 with one piece of tape wrapped from one grip around the front to the other side. Other methods include placing areas of tape in desired locations.
