Hand Gun Acquisition - Question [Ontario]

I have been thinking of obtaining my restricted licence, but have a few questions.

I was at my local gun shop and asked if I bought a handgun would i need to be a member of a club first. The guy told me i did not need to be a member of a club, he would just say im in the process of joining a club and that is all. He explained I would not need to join after taking possession of the gun,,and if i ever got questioned just to say that i changed my mind about joining.

is this information correct?
 
In Ontario, you don't need to be a member of a club, but CFC will still ask you which club you belong to. Just mention one of the clubs in your area that you will be shooting at.
Mind you, you will need an ATT to get the gun to the club.

Yes. Here in Ontario you do not need to be a member before purchasing a restricted firearm. The downside is once you get it you cannot do anything with it until you get an LTATT, which does require a club membership.
 
So if i'm in Ontario and I bought my first restricted of the EE there wouldn't be a problem with me getting it registered if I just named a local club? What if I'm at an auction and tell them I belong to a gun club I belong to but haven't taken the clubs handgun saftey course would I still get an ATT if it was my first restricted or should I atleast have one before attempting that?

Will not make any never mind where you buy it, store , auction, EE exc,
all the same rules.
In the west , we use to be reasonable, but now thay want a gunclub
member ship ( just name one close to home) before transfer takes place.
My customers have to fax a copy of the card to cfo befoe a ATT will be issued.
 
The CFO will not check up if I have a membership or not? I really just want to buy one and not join for now..i might join later on down the road i guess. When I go to buy one from a store what is the proper procedure here in Ontario? do I just walk in show my license buy it and go home? how do I get a transfer paper? gun shop handle that for me?
 
I don't believe the CFO wil check to see if you're a member of a particular club. However, the absence of a LTATT might tip them off. Tell the CFC that you intend to join a club and give them the name of the club. When you buy the gun, you'll pay for the gun in full, then the store will initiate a transfer. The transfer will go from the CFC to the CFO for approval. That might take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Once the transfer is approved, you'll be issued a notice of transfer and a STATT to transport the gun from the store to your home. The paperwork will be mailed to you and may be faxed to you and/or the store if requested. Once you have that paperwork in hand, you can go to the store, pick up the gun and take it home.

I've heard stories about CFO's monitoring the club visits of LTATT holders and deeming some gun owners collectors and/or confiscating restricted firearms. Whether the stories are true.......I don't know.

The drill is as follows. You go in with your RPAL, buy the gun, they call it in to the CFC, to register it. You go home empty handed and anywhere from a day to a few weeks later they will issue the ATT which allows you to go back to the store and pick up your new restricted firearm. Typically they fax the ATT to the store and mail you one as well. Your registration should show up in the mail about out the same time as the ATT. They will ask you what the purpose of the purchase is, which is target shooting at club ###XX, where you will store the gun, which is typically your residence. You will need a lockable case and a trigger clock to take it home in.

If you start buying more than one and are still not a member of a club, and if it goes to the CFO for approval, they might catch up with you. Then you would be required to fill out the forms/test to become a Collector.

The Firearms Act specifies that there are only 3 reasons you can own a restricted

1) Personal protection (Almost impossible to get)
2) Target shooting
3) Collecting.

So by law, you must be listed in one of those categories.

Note that not all clubs will just allow you to get a STATT and shoot at their club. You would have to be invited by a member.
 
During my getting a LATT period - there were 2 IPSC Matches at my Range. I called the CFO, sent her the email both times of the newletter, and she emailed me a Short ATT, both times she gave me from friday 6pm right through til sunday midnight. I competed, it was fun, blah blah, some time later, recieved LATT.
 
If your not a member of a club yet, because you are'nt sure what club you want to join, are you able to get a Short Term ATT to go to a club to try out the club to see if you want to join it or not. Then maybe apply for another Short Term ATT for another day to check out another club?

Also, if you want a Short Term ATT, after you call in and ask for one, do they just give you a #, and you can write it down and your good to go? Or would they be able to send you a Email of the copy, and you can print one off on your computer and then your good to go?
 
Be advised, the CFC does watch its revords, and after a while they see you have not applied forbvcollector or joined a club, they may come knocking etc
 
Dont really want to join a club right now just want a pistol..is it hard to be a collector??

anyone you guys know have pistols without being a club member?
