Hand gun scipe options?

I am going to be ordering a couple custom bbls. for a Tompson Centre Encore/Prohunter hand gun. Calibers .357 Mag and .454 Casull. I thought I would go with open sights but want to have option to put a scope on the bbl. I have 2 hand guns with HG scopes but have been looking at these red dots, don't know a thing about them. The TC Encore rifle bbls come drilled and taped for a weaver scope mount.

I have done some research. The barrel maker does not install open sights, they will do something as an option. They drill and tap for picatinny rails and sell rails for not a lot so that has to be the way to go.

Guess how long of a rail would I want?
