Anyone have any experience loading slugs for a rifled shotgun barrel?

Any thoughts on these.......

...... are welcome!

I've got a rifled shotgun barrel that doesn't get used enough, at 3 dollars a shot, I'm starting to look at options for the gun.

To my understanding, you could get the wads and load pistol bullets into a shotshell.

Anybody done anything like this?

I've never loaded sabot slugs personally but I know there are some around here who do. Normally it's a .50 cal bullet loaded into a plastic sabot.

For my rifled barrel I run Lee key drive slugs in wads designed for 1-5/8 oz of shot (Winchester orange.) The shot cup acts sort of like a sabot and keeps the lead from contacting the bore and causing leading. The key drive part of the slug keeps the slug and wad together to spin equally without too much slippage.

Factory sabot slugs can shoot one ragged hole at 50 yards. My handloads only shoot about 2-3" at 50 yards (about as good as factory rifled slugs from a smooth bore). Good enough for plinking and any hunting I intend to do with slugs but not the best. However since I load them for $0.40 each (if I have to pay for the lead), factory rifled slugs are about $1 each, and factory sabot slugs are $2-3 each so it's more bang (literally) for my buck.

I have reloaded AA hulls with the lyman Sabot Slug (Like a pellet gun pellet)
on a mec 650 using a WW wad (wad depends on powder/ wad/ primer)
Just use a fold crimp -- there is also data for a roll crimp

I also try to find a hull of a different colour (Grey AA Hull) if using the red AA hull for shot and the slug load I mark them with a marker

One day I shot 25 light slug loads --> no problem

Lots of information in the Lyman shot gun reloading book

For they price they are asking for those tool kits you almost might as well get a Lee loadall.
I've made heaps of slug rounds on that machine. I only use it for the seating and crimping tho. I use a powder measure and a scale for my powder.

Some local castors make these 69cal 1.1/8oz rounds balls I load up using shots wads.
They also make the lee key slugs but the balls are cheaper.

I use Blue Dot powder, usually in a Federal high brass hull.

Thanks! loading a .50 cal into a sabot is sort of what I'm interested in doing. The lyman slugs are hard to come by for me.

I found http://www.ballisticproducts.com/ that has some info, but to get their stuff to Canada is a chore.

I will read through the lyman reload book. thanks guys.

your not going to find RSS data in a lyman book (i have them all from #1 to #5) you have to go on BP and order it from them

lyman slugs have to be cast yourself your never going to find them

you still looking for 12 ga Cast Lyman Sabot Slugs ? .... im in Alberta , Gun Post ad ..... Lloyd 780-904 - 6961

I ended up buying a Lee .690 dia. round ball mould and using these as slugs. After experimenting with hulls and wads, I ended up with a load the produced 4” groups at 100 yds. A good way to start is to open up your cheapest target loads and simply replace the shot with whatever slug you get … and recrimp the hull. Lots more posts with more specific details in this forum. Just search around.

Been loading selfcast 12 and 16 Ga. Slugs for years. In the 12-Ga. I use the Lee 1-Oz Slug and also the Lyman Slug which looks like a Pellet Gun Pellet on Steroids. In the 16-Ga I use a Slug cast from a Mechanics Socket, weird but it works. All group reasonable well shot out of smoth non rifled Barrels.

Fired out of a rifled Barrel, I would immagine the would even group decently at further distances.

The new type of Slugs like ThugSlug from Ballistic prodacts are just excellent but way to expensife for my taste.

While having good Books on Hand like the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook # 5, it also does not hurt reading up what Tom Roster the Shotgun Professor has to say about Preassure and such.

All in all reloading Shotgun Shells is a Pain in the you know what, why I like doing it, becouse I love the illusion to be self sufficiant as much as possible !

Cheers
