It looks like a hand tinted photograph, which was a fairly common practice back then. My older brother has one of our maternal great-great grandparents done in the 1890s.

What a great family photograph. I have owned and seen several similar patriotic frames such as yours. They were a very popular items during WW1 and WW2. I'm no expert but looking at the photograph I see he is wearing a ribbon bar on his uniform. It looks like a Canadian Voluntary Service Medal 1939/45 with maple leaf. If this is the case your photograph may be post war. No matter, you have a very nice piece of family history that may bear out a little research.

well what happed is he joined in 1939 we have his medals maybe i will post a pic of them too. he was here in newmarket when they picked 3 guys to have a picture panted. It was hand painted but we had it done over on a computer to save the original one.We only found this picture about 5 years ago when he died. we also found his metals and some other "stuff" that he had put away sice he came back from the war. i just thought it would be nice to share this picture with others since i have never seen one.

Cool! I have a similar one of my great uncle from WW1, in a large oval frame. It's a photo, but clearly touched up by the photographer. It's a treasure to me. I'll post a pic some time soon!
