i was told by a dealer that there is a charge of $15 for hand select of their SKS after ten rifles so there is no charges should he find one before the eleventh. i think it worth the extra money to have all matching numbers but from what he tells me that most SKS have only 2 matching numbers , not all 4 (bolt, trigger, mag and receiver) so am i wasting my money?

sorry , if this question has been asked before, i looked but couldnt find anything.

When it comes to the SKS, hand select is probably not worth the bother. Your dealer is right, in that mismatched parts is normal.

In the glory days of WWII surplus, hand select was a great idea, seperating the wheat from the chaff.

The dealer is full of horse poop, all Mil surp SKS came out of the boxes with all matching numbers...yes even the Chinese ones.

If you have an SKS with unmatching numbers then someone OUTSIDE of the armouries fiddled with it...most likely Norinco, or more likely, the dealer themselves.

Places you will find serial numbers on a Chinese Milsurp SKS.
Holding the Rifle so the muzzle faces left...
- Left side of the receiver, to the right of the factory stamp.
- Left side of the buttstock.
- Bottom of the Magazine.
- Bottom of the trigger guard.
- Top of the bolt (right next to the charger guide).

And last but not least electro pencil on the gas tube.
Which is about the only possible and non essential to match part.

Charging $15 to take a second to look at a few places on the rifle is utter BS, and I would not deal with said dealer for anything...who are they BTW?

calum, why would the dealer mismatch the numbers on their norinco sks?

oh, its a big dealer in vancouver.

im beginning to think its not worth it.

I don't think the dealer mismatches the parts. Some of the cheapo rifles sold here in the lowermainland had all the numbers mismatched. These were not even Norinco. You'll notice that on most of the 18.5" barrels nothing matches. But these still work flawlessly for the most part. I have only one SKS imported from the US ( has a US dealer stamp on rec.)that has all match nos right down to the bolt itself. Rec.,TG, Rec Cover, bolt carrier, mag, stock and electro pen gas valve. I don't think you'll see too many with the bolt itself marked or the rec. cover either. But these are the the full length models and are either Norincos or milsurp. So all that said, full match nos are going to be more than the basement model. But the only thing I would worry about is a secure and properly headspaced fit with the barrel to the rec., a good feeling trigger and a tight fit in the stock, and maybe a chromed lined barrel for an easier cleaning. The rest is esoteric. Mismatched parts and pinned barrels will shoot as good as the next one. With a little TLC time spent on the sights you'll find great shooters which are cheap and ready to go!
God Bless the $135.00CAN 7.62X39 semi autorifle!!!! One in every pot....Rifles for the people!!!!

Their barrel issues of a certain store should be cleared up by now, but I'd still refuse to pay someone for putting their cheeseburger down for 2 minutes to glance at a rifle and see if the numbers match or not.

There are many other dealers out there that will not try to weasel $15 bucks out of you for 2 min work.
What I don't get is way can't you look at the rifles and pick your own?

I wouldn't waste $15 getting a hand selected chicom sks. It just isnt worth it as most are mismatched and even the matching ones dont command too high of a price. I got my semi matching norc type 56 off the board here for $150; everything matches but the bolt and bolt carrier-they match themselves.

Compared to the Chinese SKSs, pretty much any other kind of SKS is (relatively) rare in Canada.
In order of rareness from least to most:
Chinese (Norinco)
Chinese (Military)
Yugo
Russian

I won't even mention the less common varieties. I've yet to see an Albanian or DDR SKS in Canada.

lucky day

just brought home a sks for my 16 year old son so we can target practice together. we went to the dealer prepared to buy what ever is on the rack but was lucky to find one out of the 6 that had all matching ( trigger, rec, mag, carrier , carrier cover and bolt) , even the barrel is threaded, the rest were pinned so we didnt have to pay hand select charges. it was my lucky day, i also bot a case of ammo. my son cant wait to try out the rifle.... thanks guys.
