I was out at the range shooting hand thrown clays, you know, throw the pigeon your self and shoot it. It seems the best I am able to do with a pump mossberg and a folding stock  is only 2. And only about 50% of the time I hit both. I had a Baikal SXS that I was good for at least 75% sadly I sold it for a Beretta 424 that is useless to me because the cast is all wrong for me.

Any ways I was wondering if anyone else does this and how well, and how may pigeons they can hit.

What's your technique? What type of thrower are you using?

I've always taken someone to throw my clays for me - I figured I'de loose more clays than I hit trying to do it all myself!

I find if I just throw them with my right hand and bring my gun up and fire I hit about 80-90% now. When my brother throws them for me I'm almost 100%. I think the fact that I throw my own makes me a better all around shot. Your target acquisition improves a lot.

Ya, I just throw them out of the palm of my hand and try to hit them. Sometimes I won't have a shell in the chamber and have to pump, shoot, pump and shoot.

The entire exercise is all about bringing the gun to the shoulder, firing, reloading and firing again all with accuracy. I have been using it in the back of the quad (that's why it has a folding stock) as back up in the bush.
The clay pigeons are just practice to become competent with the gun.

I tried with the hand-thrower and hit maybe 5/10. Just throwing them with the palm of my hand I can hit about 6/10, but they are very close (I find them hard to throw by hand). Doubles - I've never tried yet.

I got a string-operated thrower (Champion thrower from Le Baron - 25$). It works fine and I can hit close to 100% of singles. Doubles go CRAZY - one way off to the left and low, the other high and right. It's good practice but my percentages are about 4/10 on the first (low) one and only anou 1/10 of the second one. Fun though!

I have been thinking of getting a Trius One-Step thrower. They're only about 120$ and are probably one of themost highly rated products on Cabela's and other websites where customers can post their reviews. The advantage is that instead of having to #### the action against an heavy spring, like the Champoin one that I have, you just step down on the lever withi your foot, which cocks and releases it all in one motion. This way you can have both hands on teh gun, which is maybe not so good practice for the fast mount, but easier and maybe safer than trying to throw, mount, safety, shoot!

That's exactly the route I am thinking of taking. The one-step is getting fantastic reviews on all sites and very economical.

my record is 3 clays, 3 shots. i usually hit about 50% of my clays. all are hand thrown as i don't have a thrower or belong to a club. i think my technique is probably lacking, as i've had no one to teach me, so i'm figuring it out as i go. most of my hits are from close range, under 30 yards. I'm using a Mossberg Maverick pump, and a modified choke. anyone have any info on technique?

Do a google search for Tom Knapp.....impressive! He is probably on youtube as well. He uses a semi but I think he'll shoot 10 hand tossed clays.
