I have a Colt A2 Sporter 14.5 inch barrel with Fatty Handguards. Getting terrible accuracy with it 4-6 inch MOA at 50-100 metres. Talk to this guy at the range today and he says try taking your handguards off. So I do and BAM!!! instantly getting 1.5-2 inch MOA now.

Anyone heard of this? What is the probelm with my handguards?

No handgaurds = free floating ;)

Appreciate feedback, but is it my handguards that need replacing? I shot his AR 20 inch and was shooting it great. 1 inch MOA at 50 metres. Can handguards get out of shape?

How can I fix this issue, new handguards?

Well you cant compare a 14.5" barrel to a 20"

I would pick up some free floating rail handgaurds if I were you.

Worth a try, they're not expensive. If you want to pay for shipping I'll send you my LMT fatty carbine handguards to try. I'm on Van. Isle so probably only cost ~$5. You can send 'em back after or buy them for cheap... up to you.

You hear about free-float guards making a big difference but I'm not convinced it matters that much for non-match grade ARs (particularly short-barreled carbines). My ArmaLite M-15A2HB shot 1.5 MOA with old style triangle handguards - definitely not F/FL.

Non FF handguards can and will affect accuracy, depending on the range, the user, and what position you're shooting from. Using some form of rest such as a tree, railing, cement wall etc will cause your POI to shift. Depending on your intended use and desired accuracy level, it may or may not be an issue. The simple solution is to FF your rifle and stop worrying about it. I've never experienced any significant change in POI but I also didn't try to induce such events. Some, such as the likes of Kyle Lamb of Viking Tactics proclaim that a shift in POI of up to 6 inches at 100 yards is possible by adversely putting pressure on the stock handugards while firing from a supported position.

A FF rail is the way to go. It eliminates the POI shift associated with stock handguards. A FF also provides a place to mount a light, vert grip or any other accessory. A FF protects the gas tube better than stock handguards, and a FF also provides for better cooling of both barrel and gas tube. Downside is the weight which with some FF rails is next to nothing and of course the cost.

As for the OP's concerns. What are you expecting out of the rifle with regards to accuracy? What is intended purpose for the rifle?

Well to me after shooting another AR and getting decent groups, 2 inches to me is what I am looking for at 100 metres. I just shoot it for fun, when my SKS out shoots my AR I kind of wonder.
I am shooting it from a sandbag 50% of the time and the other times unsupported. There is no possibility of getting groups right now unless the handguards are off, 6 inches or more at 100 metres with handguards on.

So I guess I will try a new set of handguards for now.
