Handgun Ammo at Basspro (GTA)

At the BP near Calgary I asked the guy why they carry that but no handguns- his reply was 'they are hunting ammo for guns that have similar calibers' My reply- .45acp? hunting caliber- him: '....umm'

I think it great that they have ammo, now if only they were like their stores to the south and start carrying handguns, that would be even better.

Ammo is easier than guns when it comes to restricted. There is no restricted class for standard ammo. As long as they don't carry restricted firearms, they can seem somewhat politically correct.

get a Bass Pro points card as well, and then when you have enough points, convert those to a gift card, that never expires......the points on the points card can expire....

food for thought, is all

I was there a couple weeks ago and 9mm and .40 were sold out and from what the employee said, it all goes fast. If they've got stock again, hurry up before it's gone again.

I do at times support Bass Pro. One thing they HAVE done is mass advertising to very substantial numbers of people, through distribution of their multi page flyers. In the Fall, well over half of their flyer is full of guns.

This reintroduces the sight of guns to the general population in a positive light (hunting). No small dealer can match that kind of public presence.

This advertising also helps the local dealers, expanding the market and raising awareness. Sales will spill over to various dealers too, as people begin shopping around.

Also, for those that aren't aware, Bass Pro was limited to what guns/ammo they could sell because of limits put on them by their municipality. They wanted to sell handguns and have an onsite range too.

Yup. The only way the city of Vaughan would allow BassPro to open up and operate was by making sure they wouldn't sell or have any handguns/pistols in the store.

So for few $$$ you stop carring for the local smaller dealers.

Do not take it personnal , we are all driven by the mighty $$$.

Uh.... I'm confused. Didn't I say I would avoid Bass Pro and instead support the smaller dealers unless there was a "huge" cost incentive?

Now, if my dealer is charging me twice as much as Bass Pro and hundreds of dollars are involved... then there is an issue obviously.

^^^too bad they built in in Vaughan then.

Of course it was a business decision, and it is a GREAT location.

Now they are carrying handgun ammo. Give it a few years, and who knows, municipal councils change, public perception changes.

As I mentioned, look at the BP flyers they distribute across the GTA. In the fall there is a huge emphasis on GUNS. This marketing is evidently having an effect, as witnessed by the handgun ammo they are now selling.

Before they were prohibited from selling handgun ammo by the City of Vaughan.

I have always had bad experiences with the Bass Pro @ Vaughn Mills, is it just me or do the people that work there seem pretty rude? I was denied seeing a firearm they had on hand despite having my pal with me.

I asked the same question once to them when they first came to calgary. Although i got a better answer then that. From what i was told it is company policy not to carry handguns, in canada and the united states besides their find gun room. They also do not show them on the website (minus the find gun room selection and the flyers) because of company policy too.

It is because of an incident that had happened in the states that sparked a company wide policy. Now this is knowledge that i got from a normal worker as Bass pro so i have no idea if its right or not, but it was the answer i was given, and just sharing ;)

I think it's hit and miss.

A couple of times I was actually delighted with the help I received. But then, I don't necessarily go in seeking advice- it's usually to see or ask about a specific item.

I know it's a bit blasphemous, but on the whole, it hasn't been too bad.
