The Liberal Government has issued a 30 day consultation period for a potential handgun and ‘assault weapon’ ban. Here is the link:

Reducing violent crime: A dialogue on handguns and assault ...

Keeping communities safe and reducing violent crime is a priority for the Government of Canada. This is why, in his Mandate letter, the Prime Minister has asked the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction, to lead an examination of a ban on handguns and ...

I urge everyone to open the link, it is a short easy read and then write a few notes, yes a hand written letter to the address that is provided.

A few points you may like to mention:

Quote: to lead an examination of a ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada, while not impeding the lawful use of firearms by Canadians. Notice the different use of the words I highlighted.

Quote: Any ban of handguns or assault weapons would primarily affect legal firearms owners, Surprize surprize, so why ban them?

Quote: “Assault weapon” is not a legally defined term in Canada's firearms legislation. Various international jurisdictions use different terms and definitions, often based on physical characteristics. For illustrative purposes, the US Department of Justice has used the following description: “in general, assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine. Then we are told large magazines are prohibited so how can this definition be relevant in Canada? or even to this debate.

We also know that true "assault rifles" are also prohibited.

Quote: In Canada, there are also limits on the number of cartridges a firearm magazine can hold – ten for semi-automatic handguns and five for other centre-fire semi-automatic firearms. Magazines of a larger capacity are prohibited.

The bottom line is "Get hard on crime not us" legal law abiding gun owners.

This whole issue is with reguards to the U.N. Small arms trade treaty and the disarmament of “illicit firearms” to which no definition has been made

“Assault rifle” is a improperly defined term in this farce because we have mag capacity limitations. Therefore the rest of the definition is based in aesthetics.

Agreed! Also is a true "Assault Rifle" select fire and fires an Intermediate Cartridge?

Seems like a ban was the plan all along and they will use anything they can (i.e, politicizing every single gang shooting) to push their agenda. Liberals claim to be inclusive and accepting of all lifestyles and life choices when the exact opposite is true. If you do not fit their narrow ideology you are cast aside like a Leper.

Done with comments throughout the questionnaire.
Something to note as well, I did NOT include my race or age.
No doubt this corrupt government will ignore any comments from old white males - probably delete them from the very outset.
Same as the Chretien government refused to listen to gun owners back when he and Rock launched the Long Gun 2 Billion Dollar Boondoggle.
It'll be interesting to see if the Trudeau regime (you know the transparent government) will actually release the results of this "consultation".

Completed with notations. I noted that they only wanted comments when you agreed with greater gun control. Also the terminology is problematic. Assault is an action committed by a person on another person. No firearm has ever assaulted anyone without a human involved. So is it done this way on purpose, to confuse and conflate. The ban on assault weapons is really just an excuse to take away semi automatics. So to put in perspective, Alex Minnasian used a van to assault a number of people with a rental automatic transmission vehicle. Do weblame the rental company? Do we ban all automatic transmission vehicles because it potentially could make it easier to run over people? The individual controlling the tool is always responsible for their actions. To try and blame the tool and remove the tool from the law abiding gun owners of Canada is literally insane. It doesn't address the underlying issues of violence, crime, drug addition and economic conditions that are the underpinnings of violence in society.

I am a sceptic though and my hope is we will be heard, but based on what I see from the Trudeau government I suspect that this is all lip service. It will be interesting to see what is released on the consultation. Why is the cross country hearings based on a invitation only? I wonder who they will invite? My guess it will be all of the anti-gun groups, and I doubt if the pro sport shooting & hunting community will not be represented.

So a 5min search at Statistics Canada will tell you clearly that firearm is only involved in 3% of all violent crime...

https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-005-x/2018001/article/54962-eng.htm Firearm-related violent crime in Canada
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-005-x/2018001/article/54980-eng.htm Firearms and violent crime in Canada, 2016

In 2016, 20% of all police reported crime is violent crime (crime against the person: homicide, attempted murder, assault, ###ual assault and robbery). 61% is property crime and 19% other violations.

Of all violent crimes, 3% involved a firearm. 78% no weapon and 20% other weapons (e.g. knife).

"Relatively speaking, very few injuries that result from violent crime are caused by firearms. There were just over 116,000 victims of violent crime in 2016 who sustained injuries as a result; of these, about 1,500 (1%) were caused by a firearm. However, as would be expected, firearms were proportionately more responsible for incidents resulting in more severe injury. Among victims of violent crime, firearms were the cause of injury for just under 1% of all victims who sustained minor physical injuries, 6% of all major physical injuries, and 32% of deaths."

LOL, evidence-based policies eh?

I think this is only smoke and mirrors,..as soon as they can convince the great unwashed that a ban is best for all,... guess what....and you think an Australian or UK style ban can't happen here ??....2019 can't get here fast enough..

To all those who said done, I assume you hand wrote a letter? Filling out a survey with loaded questions hardly achieves anything!

Some of you have written good posts here, I assume to that these were sent in as a letter?

Preaching to the choir never archived anything.

I am so fed up with this government nonsence. A ban or making them illegal won't do anything. Last time it was illegal to drink and drive, murder, and rape people but guess what ? It still happens like every other ban and things that are illegal. Just shows how stupid our society is now. Just WOW.

Dear Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction;

I'm writing to you today as a concerned Canadian who wishes to voice his opinion on your planned handgun & 'assault' weapons ban. As someone who spends time hunting and target shooting, I am not in support of further restrictions on law abiding firearms owners.

Any handgun or assault weapon ban you enact will only burden the law abiding. Criminals don't follow the current law, and they certainly won't follow any additional law(s), so your planned ban will only affect law abiding owners.

As a result, the confiscation of these firearms from law abiding owners will not increase public safety, but it will most certainly affect their lawful use by Canadians.

It is for this reason, I can not support your planned handgun and assault weapon ban.

Sincerely
Jay

John....your a wise man who’s been around along time and should know full well that all the letters we write will never change the outcome of the libs plan! The soon implementation of C-71 should tell ya that along with a petition with 80k sigs totally ignored. I know your heart is in the right place but you old wise gunnies tactics have failed us all and it’s time to take an approach not yet tried.
Voting cpc may holdem off(I doubt it) but will give them my vote again but if we continue this make belief fairy tale of letters, hopes and prayer will save us they will roll over us as they have done in the past!! Wake up people.

Thanks for posting this Mr. Hipwell, I have sent an email and will let everyone know in our little corner of Manitoba to send and email and to be vocal about this!
