Are there courses (preferably in BC) that teach handgun shooting and such sort of like what they learn for LEO's and such?

The Justice Institute of BC (use to be JI of New West) used to have courses but now I can't find them.

I talked to the Justice Institute and they told me they no longer hold the Handgun and Shotgun courses separately outside of the Police Academy and the Armed Guard Programs.

While I need to be certified/taken a handgun course for the job I'm applying for....

Have you looked at courses in the states? They might have some there. Just a thought, I guess your potential employee would have to be okay with the US certification (if available).

Actually the training can pretty much be anywhere (since this is a European company). The only reason I want to see if there are any in Canada (mainly BC) is to save on costs.

I'd be interested in a Canadian version of Front Sight or similar. I can shoot alright but I'd like to learn from a genuine pro.

Yeah I looked into Front Sight and that is exactly the kind of course that the employer wants me to take, sadly $2000 USD plus travel and lodging makes it a very expensive course for only 4 days. :(

Try Silvercore.ca they're based in Surrey/Langley and I believe they're the same guys who teach at the JI (or they were). Training in the US is much more difficult these days, you'll need a DHS background check for most of the serious stuff.

I just picked up a Front Sight course certificate from ebay for $200.00. It's good for a 4 day course or for 2 people to attend a two day course (first time students only). Travel expenses will still add up, but, for me, saving $1800.00 on the course is worth the effort.

Out of curiosity, which company is it that has got your looking for training?

I'd probably just start with the Silvercore in Vancouver/Delta first and take their level 1 and 2 handgun courses.

I'm not sure of the name of the company as my friend works for them (he currently lives part time in Amsterdam, Netherlands and Warsaw Poland) and brought the subject up to his employer of hiring me. He told me the work is "personal security where you don't ask questions" whatever that means as he speaks pretty broken English.

Unless yur insistent on staying in Vegas, theres a couple of good places in Pahrump to stay. I have been to Front Sight for a few courses and I must tell you that depending on what course you are planning on attending, you need to keep in mind that they are intended for somebody with little/no practical experience with handgun. Its pretty basic for the first couple of days even on the Defensive 4day course.

I don't mind having to sit through the first couple easy days cause even people who think they know everything can always pick up something new. $225 CDN instead of the $2000 USD for the course is a good savings.

The costs build up with approx $700 CDN airfare, $125 a night for a hotel, food, etc.

I have taken a few courses at the Sig Arms Academy but they have now started to charge a $250.00 USD fee for the State Dept. clearance for Canadians. You can list several courses and have the clearance good for 1 year but if you are only interested in 1 course that's quite a hit.

Check out all the tactical response and/or LMS courses listed in the "events and gathering" area here on the forum. LOTS of good stuff there! Or try out a Skills/Drills night out in Abby to get you on the right track. Rob's great to shoot with.

It really depends on what you want to learn or hone. If its just the mechanical skills than any of the major schools would suffice. If you're want to cultivate a warrior mindset than Tactical Response is a good place to start. Two fellow TR Alumni had recently finished attending Front Sight for a 4 day carbine course, and they both said it sucked by comparison and were glad they didn't pay for it(coupon thing).

Why not attend The Firearms Academy of Seattle?

Given that statement, you might want to consider starting with a course with a particular focus on your learning both the laws and your responsibilities.
