Handgun for 'little guy'

My son loves to shoot handguns, but being 10 and not terribly strong, tends to 'limp wrist' (often causing cycling problems) and has trouble holding the guns out properly. He likes to shoot my 1911 .45, but isn't a big fan of the recoil or weight but of course doesn't like the .22 that much as it has none at all (plus it jams like crazy when he shoots it which can lead to dangerous situations).

I'm thinking some kind of small & light revolver (no jamming problems and simple) that shoots cheap factory ammo (something with a little more fun factor than a .22), that he can hold properly easily and not form a bunch of bad habits. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I've never seen a tupperware revolver before... :D

That said, there is a compensated Glock G17L in the EE for $575 that would probably be really easy for a kid to shoot.

my 9 yr old shoots a S&W Model 36 snubbie with light .38 spl loads in it...found thats the best alround handgun for him to shoot

The Ruger 22/45MK111 auto loader is great for small hands. Same grip angle as dad 45. Might be easier for a small hand to operate than a revolver.

Taurus has a light frame .22 that's pretty inexpensive

Actually the Glock (though it is not a revolver) is a very good suggestion. You could get yourself a G17 9mm or a G22 40S&W then purchase a Advantage Arms 22LR conversion kit for it.

You end up with a very nice reliable handgun for yourself and due to the aluminum construction of the 22lr conversion slide an extremely light reliable 22LR for your son. When he gets a bit older or when he is ready for more he can move up to the 9mm or 40S&W. Same grip/trigger that he has been training with so the transission should be very easy for him.

I have a G20 10mm and a AA 22lr conversion for it. It is unbelievably light and accurate with the conversion kit on. I find that Stingers, Mini Mags and Velocitors perform the best in mine. Silver box Winchester rounds are very dependable in my unit as well.

SW model 17, 6" barrel, K-frame. Accurate, no recoil, probably get one used in VG condition for $350. Shoots CB caps, shorts, longs as welll as long rifle .22 RF.

To add to the fun factor, get one of those steel re-settable Birchwood-Casy targets for $40 and set it up at 25 yards. He'll have a blast.

It's a revolver he'll shoot and appreciate for the rest of his life.

My daughter started shooting when she was 9. I bought her a S&W 622
.22 LR with a 4 1/4" barrel. It has an aluminum body, stainless slide and steel barrel. Very light and cheap to shoot. You have to gunsmith the trigger and extractor but after that they shoot most any ammo and are even fairly accurate. Most people on say they are crap guns but they just need a little work to make them excellent shooters. There is no way she would let me
sell it thats for sure.

Well I just had a family friend out to the range he was only 11 and smaller than the average 11 year old, and once we gave him the through and through and on the Beretta 92fs he was ok, I shot the first round(s) with my hands over his and he was ok, so he tried a few by himself and did quite well...

I would say keep the door open to any gun, hopefully he can maybe try the gun out before the buy...

I know you mentioned revolver, but my kids loved my WaltherP99 until i sold it(only to buy more guns though!!)
It fits nice for virtually anyone, light, and has a decent kick in 9mm.
