My dad only has one arm, his left, and I have recently encouraged him to renew his expired firearms license. Incredibly, he is able to shoot all the rifles I have so far, but I am encouraging him to get a handgun as well as a couple rifles. I am curious, though, after doing some searching as to which handgun would be best for a one armed lefty? At present I am leaning towards the CZ-75B Shadow 9mm, but does anyone have any other recommendations?

Keep in mind that just being a left handed firearm is not enough. Having only one arm, he needs to be able to be able to load the magazine, cycle the action, and hopefully take it apart for cleaning (this is probably the most difficult requirement).

To cycle a semi-automatic without an exposed hammer, he would typically use the sights on the slide and grip the side of his jeans or the carpet on the shooting table.

Anyways, I am curious to see what you all come up with.

Cheers.

A revolver?

That would be my best guess if he plans to shoot it by himself. I don't see an easy way around cycling the action on a semi auto safely with one hand. With a revolver, you might be able to use one of those barrel insert storage thingys. A plastic pin on a base, clamp it to the shooting bench and you could slide the revolver barrel onto it. It would hold it relatively sturdy for reloading and keep it pointed in a safe direction. That's my best idea for the moment....

Check out Rob Pincus' videos, he has a lot on one hand manipulations and even helped develop a line of rear sights that deal with it.

Regardless of what gun he gets a few holding jigs to aid in reloading is the key to working on his own. A jig to hold mags while inserting rounds with the hand for semi autos or a jig to rest the revolver in with the muzzle down at around 45° to aid in the rounds sliding into the cylinder.

He might only have one hand attached but that doesn't mean he can't bring along a few separate "helping hand" jigs that hold guns or magazines.

What about a glock or m&p with one of those self racking holsters. That way he can have a cool poly gun and fully operate it single handed. M&p would be best as he could put an empty mag in. Use the holster and trip the takedown lever, take the mag out, use the holster to release the slide then pull the trigger .. Maybe I'm out in left field but it makes sense in my head

I just racked my NZ85 one handed by resting the rear sight on the edge of a table and pushing down.
Worked perfect - might do it that way all the time. Just don't aim at your toes.

Actually Beretta mentions this in one of their brochures.

"D. Rear Sight Profile: The rear sight is designed to provide a front projection so that in an
emergency, the user may retract the slide single-handedly by pushing the rear sight against
the edge of a table, door, etc."

Glock Gen 4 easy to take apart can flip the magazine release over to left side.

To take it apart you unload it of course then put your thumb around the slide then push it back a little them pull the relase pin with the same hand and it just slides right out the barrel and spring are right there making it very simple to put back together as well.

Last year I bought a TT-33 Tokarev compensator which was sufficiently long that one could fully cycle the action by pushing against any hard object. I'm told that this was an innovation develloped by Tokarev himself when his strength and health were failing.

I'd think a M&P or a Glock would be easiest.A CZ might be tough for him to manually drop the hammer but he could just use the safety.I'd let him play around with a few pistols and see what HE would like to shoot. He may find it easiest to rack his slide on his holster as long as he's careful to keep his finger off the trigger.

Thanks for all the tips guys. All great ideas to consider. We already have a good idea on how to rack a semi-auto one handed, etc... However, I like the idea of the self racking holsters.
