handguns for moose

I know of a guy who shot a couple of moose with a ruger redhawk .44mag. It worked but he had to shoot each one about 6 times. Not an ideal moose gun i suppose but it did work.

eamon, thanks for the response. Reguardless of what is used, shot placement is # 1. However, to help tip the odds in my favour somewhat if this hunt materializes, I plan to use a 500 S&W with handloads.
 
i know SW has the .500, dont they make an alaskan series in .454 .444 and 45-70?

id probably take one of those, or atleasty the 45-70, its a rifle round, and i know in rifles its good for moose

Not that I'm aware of. The 'Big Smith', the X-Frame, comes in two calibres, the 500 S&W Magnum & the 460 S&W Magnum. From the April 2005 issue of Guns & Ammo, an article by Payton Miller states the 460 will also accept .45 Colt & .454 Casull cartridges. Nothing on the 45-70 or 444 but in the future, who knows.......

Then he was:
1. Using the wrong ammo
or
2. Didn't hit the moose in the right spot
or
3. Was shooting from too far
 
I was lucky enough to be able to hunt Boar in Vermont with a Handgun.
It was awesome, wish we could do the same here.

Just get as close as you can.
