Handgun Hunting; If you could, what would you use?

Nice! Sooooo jealous.

Where did you get it from? Private sale or did you get it new?

Sorry for the delay, been working, I bought it new from a US dealer, and importing her. I wanted a very specific FA, the perfect one being a 4.75" M83 Premier Grade in .475... Just doesn't exist up here so had to go the long way. Decided to bite the (large) bullet, as I wanted the perfect gun, that gun will likely fly with me for ATC for work in the future as well. No sense cheaping out in that case.

I like your big game suggestion, as for your small game suggestion, you a terrible shot? Never heard of hunting anything with a 30 round mag!

The 30 round mag wouldn't add to much weight to the package and if you get jumped by a cougar it might help to have a few extra on tap.....

If one did any online research on the KelTect PMR, the magazine was the weak link in the design. Apparently the magazine walls we too fragile, and if one dropped the full mag on the floor it was come apart like a glass cup.

nice idead, poor design

Something I've recently acquired that would be a good size and handy to pack for Grouse, a 4" Ruger SP-101 in 22 LR.

And, for big game, A 4" 29 in 44 Mag or the 500 S&W.

A new addition:D:D to the group to use for hunting. SS Ruger Blackhawk, 4 5/8" in 45 LC and 45 ACP.

I would likely use what I already have. For big game, I would use my stainless Ruger Redhawk .45 Colt. With 300 grain hard cast bullets over a heavy charge of H-110 it would sure do the job. I use this same load out of a Winchester Trapper and it was very effective on a black bear. Next year I'm hoping to visit a friend in Texas and do some hog hunting with the Redhawk and the 300 grain cast load.

For small game I would likely pick up a CZ Kadet .22 conversion kit for my CZ 85 Combat. However, I really like the looks of Johnn Peterson's SP-101. That looks like something I could enjoy.

Only on CGN, do we worry about and arm ourselves to the teeth for the absolutely most remote possibilities! The last thing I'd want is a rimfire plastic semi in this particular less-likely-than-lightning death scenario. One round of hot .44 Mag would do better for one than 30 rounds of 40gr bullets.

That said, a lot of us chase grouse with rimfire rifles without 30 round mags and survive the cougar onslaught. Just had to say that keltec was a rather peculiar choice, from a guy who likes handgun hunting.

Now, the following is a new string of thought not related to the above. Handgun hunting has the unfortunate side effect of people that don't hunt much going afield just because they want to take their pistol. A lot of deer are wounded and not recovered every year in the US by pipsqueek (for hunting) cals like .45 ACP. Hunting deer should start at .41 Mag for smaller stuff, on up to the .475's and .500's for big bodied stuff West and North. .357 would work just fine for BC blacktails though. This doesn't apply to nifty little grousers like the Bearcat revolver of course, different use. I'm also definitely not a fan of most semis for hunting, and frankly, revolvers are a better choice for the field anyhow. I hope it happens one day, I'd be one of the first posting a game pic in the fall of that imaginary year. I may get to do some hunting with my sidearm revolver in Africa next time I'm over, the .475 Linebaugh mentioned. All depends which countries I'm headed to, some I can, some I can't. If I only get 'can' country/ies I will do and will post the story.

I'm not worried about it but at the same time if my mag held more then 6 shots I might fill it up anyways and if I was attacked I would use what ever I had and I probably wouldn't pack the .44 for grouse.

Hey you can pack what ever you like but I just didn't see the need for the " hey what, can't you shoot? who needs 30 rounds for hunting" mentality so I suggested a scenario where more then 10 shots of .22 mag might be handy.

Is it likely to happen? No Is it possible? yes.

I'm sure I've spent more time in the bush with out a gun then most around here so the cougar onslaught doesn't keep me under the covers.....

Ardent, would you be happier with buddy's personal choice of a semi auto .22mag pistol if it only held 10 rounds?

I guess I don't see a problem with more then 10 rounds on tap if it's compact and handy....

When I lived down South, I did some hunting with pistols.

I shot 3 whitetails with my Novak .45 1911 with SuperVel HPs. My only pistol shot antelope was shot with a Colt Detective Special in .38 Special at 7 yards. I laid down in some buckbrush at it walked up to me.

For squirrels and birds, a Ruger .22 bull barrel worked well.

Just an interesting note, Alberta Fish and Game Association again passed a resolution asking the Alberta Government to drop the prohibition on hunting with pistols and revolvers.
