I overheard some guys discussing a proposed, limited, handgun hunting season. Is this for real, or just wishful thinking?

An interesting, and disappointing, trend I've noticed is the provinces and their Hunting regs.

It wasn't specifically mentioned in the AB Hunting regs that handgun hunting any animal was illegal, then a couple years ago <poof> it was in the regs.

I may be incorrect on this, but it would seem the provinces are quietly in CYA mode.

dare to dream. i think it is a bit chicken and egg, the feds won't issue ATT for hunting since you can't, and the provinces won't have a season because you can't get an ATT.

i think the place to start would be pressuring for a small game handgun hunting season, this will overcome the "wounded deer, shot with inadequate handgun" crowd.

Should be - shot by inadequate shooter

i agree, but any debate about handgun hunting is going to have some hunters show up concerned about guys blazing away at moose with some 9mm autoloader. and baby steps are probably the way to go. to me this means small game for a start.

One possible outcome with the baby steps:
a) you will never win over those hunters with that mindset anyways
b) if you go the "just for small game route" you would be playing their game again that handguns shouldn't be used for hunting big game

Bah. It should be allowed, period.

But the political social engineering in this country is creepingly regulating them out of existance.

If you were able to hunt with handguns, that would mean they'd have a purpose outside of target shooting, and that doesn't sit well with the government drones. "We want fewer justifications of their existance not more, my bureaucratic brother! We shant have the great unwashed public keeping or finding MORE legal uses for these dreadful, evil, scary inventions we're trying to get rid of for their own good!"

i agree, but it is better to have those guys on the sidelines than playing for the other side.

battles need to be picked that can be won. IMO, getting handguns allowed for small game is much more likely than for big game.

you dont say just small game, you say just small game for now and see where it goes. I for one would hunt with a pistol i think it would be really neat, you would have to get nice and close like bowhunting which would be soo exciting and fun.

WHO MADE THESE DUMB LAWS NEWAYS!! sometimes i just wanna move to the states. ya i said it!

Someone needs to take the time to point out to the PEOPLE and then the government how carry permits reduce crime rates. We need to get that rollin because we are the only country that has the advantage of having a neighbouring country with open and conceal carry, and they could help us out!

rant completed.

Why would it be OK to wound small game IF that is a concern? Am I to believe that a person competent enough to take small game will somehow not be proficient enough to cleanly take a larger animal?

If this is what we want, why are we supplying the caveats to go with it?

well i think if your in an appropriate range and have the proper caliber to take down big game, why not be able to hunt large game with a handgun. people wound animals all the time with rifles and dont track and finish them, pisses me off, if your gunna hunt learn how to shoot first! I dont like seeing 3 legged deer running around!

I think if you know the limits of your firearm and know how to use it i dont see any reason why they cant be used to hunt.

i think it's along the same lines as hunters that don't support using dogs for deer, bear, cougar, etc. or hunters against people using black or green rifles. or hunters against other hunters using bait.

i think specifying small game is about silencing those hunters out there that have a problem with handguns.

"...a proposed, limited, handgun hunting season..." More than wishful thinking. Total halucination.
"...Not that long ago..." Over 40 years. Been shooting since the early 70's. Hunting with a handgun has never been legal in that time.
"...wasn't specifically mentioned in the AB Hunting regs.." Item 5 under 'General Prohibitions'. http://www.albertaregulations.ca/huntingregs/

Ask them to make it legal for bow hunters to carry a handgun for dispatching wounded animals for humane reasons. Also the small game route is a possibilty, but you can also us the US hunting regs for examples, likely there are some out there that specfiy calibre for certain game. Submit these as examples and perhaps e-mail the Conservation Officers down there for information on any issues with handgun hunting. If it's positive submit that as well, every year send letters to the various orgs and goverment agencies. Well written, well supported arguments do slowly make an impact.

I shoot gophers with a handgun, on private property. I suppose, technically, it's illegal. If Canada were to follow the US trend, and increase the number of private "game farms", there's no reason handguns shouldn't be allowed. As far as adequate firepower is concerned, deer and wild pig would be no problem. In my town, we have to chase deer out of our yards. I think you could take one with a big rock, if you had a good throwing arm.
