handgun loading on a rifle press??

Hi all,

I've been reloading rifles for a long time...but was recently asked if a fella could reload handgun cartridges like 45 or 38/357 on a rifle press.

while the rifle press has a long stroke and may not be as productive as proper rotating press designed for handgun reloading...i "think" the dies fit. do they??

Yes you sure can and many people do every day. Almost all modern dies are the same thread 7/8"x14 and will work in any modern press short of a few of the higher end Progressives.

I still like loading all my .357mag on my single stage, same press that does my .308 etc.

dies have the same threads and there are people on here that load their ammo this way

i load 44/40 on my single stage (it's pretty mch the same case dimensions as 44mag) i only do it because i don't shoot lots of it and the brass is easy to bugger up on the progressive

I do, I only have the one press and load 45 colt for my revolvers. I could see that if I had autos it would be hard to keep up but the revolvers dont chew up the ammo as fast, at least I dont shoot enough to make to laborious

I load everything from 243 to 300 rifle and 380 to 45 pistol on my lyman single, no problem

As stated, the dies fit and it works...however, if you are planning on doing any type of volume (say, more than 50-100 at a time) I would highly recommend a progressive press.

you can even get extended shell holders to lessen your stroke length.

I have a single stage Bair press I use for .308, .303, 9mm, and one of these days, .38 S&W.
