Handgun NOOB...help me pick a gun!

$699 @ The Shooting Edge. I really like the ported one too. :(

The "tactical" 5" model is the only one available. You can get them in OD green. They look even better "in the flesh".

Some will correct me if I'm wrong.

But "only one available" is referring to model (all other models are prohib due to barrel length)

They do not make a 5" ported

XD was designed be a 4in gun, I really don't like the way they extended the slide but left the frame the same; looks ugly as hell IMO. XD-service model is a good looking gun though…

Don't overlook Steyr M9-A1, it's a 4in gun with a factory 106mm barrel Steyr makes just for us, and it still costs less than a Glock 17 :)

mine has ‘regular’ trapezoid/triangular sights but they aren’t night sites (I heard night sites might be available soon)

Steyr M was invented in 1999 (same year as HS2000 aka SA XD but due to Springfield’s aggressive marketing it became popular pretty quickly) so hasn’t been around for that long and the new A1 model has only been around for about 2 years. If you look at the American Handgunner or American Rifleman magazines you find a full size ad of M-A1, so yeah I think they’re here to stay :)

I'm also in the middle of shopping for a handgun. I've held an array of guns and am still narrowing down my options. If you cannot track down gunnutz or other people at ranges to let you try out their stuff, head to your local store and handle their stuff. See what fits your hand and once you've found a few that you like, if you can, shoot them. If you cannot shoot them, go with what feels best. I would also balance this CGN reviews.

For what it's worth, I started off planing on picking up a Norc 1911, then decided to go quality over price. I went down to Wholesale sports and handled a Beretta 96 with rubber grips, Ruger P89, and Glock 17. The Beretta was comfortable but didn't really appeal to me, the Ruger was way to clunky, though cheap, and the Glock felt like a toy that would break if I just looked at it. Then I decided on a Hi-Power, which I also handled at Wholesale, for it's small grip (I have smallish hands) but changed my mind after experiencing hammer bite problems on an Inglis model I tried. I also had a chance to shoot a P89 and realized that even though it was cheap, it just wasn't for me. I've also had a go with a 1911 and liked the small grip and may consider a 1911 in 9mm (not norc). I handled a CZ-75 and found the trigger too far forward for comfort. I shot a Glock 22 last year, and don't really remember it well, but could recall that even though it was the first handgun I'd shot in 5 or so years it was comfortable. Recently, I had a chance to manhandle someone's USP tactical and a Para-Ordnance 1911 in .40. I like the USP's paddle type mag release but it's pricey.

So now, after several months, I've narrowed it down to a USP, Glock, or perhaps an XD-9 (if I get to try one out of course). If you have your heart set on one gun, try it out first. It seems like you do not, so take your time and see what you like. The money may be burning a whole in your pocket but at least you'll know that what you end up with you'll like.
