Honestly you do not need to start off with 22. My father never owned a 22LR in his life. A 22LR was my 3rd gun. First was a 308 M1A, then a 45 acp 1911 and then a 22 Marlin.
I agree that having a .22lr is not a requirement as a starter for an adult or even older kids.
To the OP, start close, 5m or less and SLOWLY work your way out. Don't try to run before you can walk. Pratice a good grip, sight picture and trigger control and you will have no issues. If you try to rush it you will have poor results and become frustrated quickly.
