Like many I suppose????

I have several different caliber / style handguns but am using rifle cleaning kits to clean them.

Are there any handgun specific cleaning kits that will cover .177 - .45 calibers?

Thanks,

HA

Like many I bought one or two of the break down rifle cleaning kits. And was given a couple of others.

Since I went over to solid style rifle rods I've got all these segments which I use for handguns. With roughly 1/2 to 2/3 of a turn in the short barrels it's not a big deal to allow the rod to rotate in my grip and use the short extension segments for handguns.

But one thing I always do when I need to clean from the muzzle is use the conical crown protector.

I don't have any .17 handguns and the rods I do use are all good for a .22. But clearly you'd need a 1/8 size rod for the .17. That would be rather special.

I tend to avoid kits. They tend to be of poor quality, segmented rods that always unscrew and trap grit, and you end up with several pieces that you never use.

Buy what you need individually. Pick up a good quality solid rod and the brushes and patch holders you need for each caliber. Flex should not be an issue in even the longest pistol barrels so a .22 size rod will be fine in pistols up to 45 with no issues. the .177 would be an exception of course.

If you want a tight fitting rod then you will have to buy separate size rods for each caliber. But you will still be better off then buying a do all kit.

Pick up one of those plastic hardware drawer sets from Canadian tire and keep each set of caliber tools (brushes, patch holders/jags, mops, ect) in a labeled drawer and their you go.

That being said if you wanted a kit to through into your bag for a field kit Otis makes a large selection that comes in a handy pouch. they use a pull through which is not ideal but field kits are not meant for detailed cleaning anyways.

The Accupro ones are a good unit. Looks like a acrew driver, holds the pieces in the base. They are about $15 at Wholesale or Cabelas if I recall correctly. I would recommend buy the Accupro jags too, very slick piece. If you buy one of these you'll have to buy jags and brushes for each caliber you use as they only come with one or two calibers. I would steer clear from the Hoppe's one of this style as it's a steaming pile of garbage. I broke it literally within seconds of first use.
