Handgun stand for inside a safe

I need help finding a pistol rack for inside a safe.

I’ve arranged a section of the safe that is 16” wide by 19” deep by 20” high.

I presently have 2 shelves with the handguns sitting on their side, which isn’t the best use of the space.

I can keep both shelves and have 2 individual racks (each shelve has about 9” of height clearance) or remove the top shelve and accommodate for a higher stand that fits 2 rows of handguns stacked.

Obviously I need this to be as big as possible and handle the most amount of pistols. Also, it has to be trigger lock friendly (and I know that since it’s a real safe I don’t need triggger locks, but I still want to use them ).

I found a bunch of 6 pistol racks that fit and leave lost space on the side, or 8 pistol racks that Don’t fit. If I use 2 racks of 6, then that’s 12 pistols max, and that’s not enough, as I presently have 11, and I know it won’t be long before I add another. 16 would be a good start for now.

any recommendations? What did you guys do ? Custom work ?

Look at gun storage solutions handgun hangers. Bullseye London (a site sponsor) has them. That's what I use, and I have about 24 handguns on 2 shelves in my safe. They are plastic coated and don't damage the barrel, and I still have room for my long guns underneath

I use the Benchmaster racks from Amazon. Looks like the 8 gun would fit with a few inches to spare so you could always stand gun #9 and possibly 10 up between the rack and the carpeted (I assume) wall of the safe. Biggest issue is I don't think they will work with trigger locks. If you have an actual safe as opposed to a metal cabinet you might want to rethink the trigger lock thing. They really do stand in the way of using space effectively. if you are absolutely set on trigger locks Dogzilla's suggestion is likely your best option. Must racks are made for the US market where trigger locks aren't a consideration. These are the 6 gun racks in my safe

I built my own out of some scrap wood left over from developing my basement ,easy to make I can make one in 1/2 hour.

If you want exact measurements I can pull them out and get them for you. I added a variety of guns into it there's a full size 1911 and a commander as well as a shadow and a pietta single action revolver and a vz61 I can fit them all with trigger locks no problem and I have a space underneath to gain some extra storage space and for plastic mags that can't be mounted to my magnetic strips on the safe door.

@skoal. Thanks for the pic and offer to take measurements. I’ve seen similar looking plans online. they look good and can be adjusted to fit exactly. What special tools would I need to pull this off ? I have some basic power tools (drill, rotary saw, reciprocating saw). But I assume i’ll need some sort of router for the base plate where the grips are resting ??

I used a hole saw and a cordless drill then cut up to the edges of the holes with a circular saw same as the notches on the back for the barrel. I don't have a whole lot of tools eigther but with a drill and a even a bandsaw you could make these.

If you took out the bottom storage area you could easily make this a double decker or even a triple. Mine only fit 5 in a row but you might be able to squeeze a 6th if you tighten up everything but might be tough with trigger locks.

OP.....Sorry but curiosity overwhelms me. If you are keeping your handguns in a safe why are you storing them with trigger locks applied? Not condemning or judging you at all....just genuinely curious.

Not sure what the OP's reason is - probably just another layer of "security". If your home gets broken into and your guns get stolen, it is common practice for the police to charge you with Unsafe Storage - whether they're in a safe, or anything else. When you go to court to fight the charge, it is another security device that you've employed, to prove to the court, that you were doing all you could to keep your firearms secure. You are right, however - trigger locks and a safe are redundant.
 
Well, that's not a bad point. My regular combo trigger locks don't fit my AR very well so i use one of those screw on ones where the key is a specially shaped socket. They are such a PITA to put on and take off I store the AR with the lock on. As to trigger locking the pistols....it would save time but the locks eat up so much storage room in the safe it's just not practical for me. Plus I don't own that many trigger locks.;)
 
There are numerous reasons i want to add trigger locks in the safe. Mainly Safety and legal liability. But that’s a whole other point to be discussed another time.

@skoal. Thanks for the pics and measurements. This looks like it would be the most versatile setup and I can make each slot custom to accommodate smaller or larger guns.

I also like the idea of the wire hangers. But I’m not confortable with the idea of hanging guns. So I’m on the fence on that one.

Looks like I will have a woodworking project ahead of me. I’ll update this thread with pics once I’m all done. Thanks for all the help and suggestions
 
I was on the fence about the wire hangers till I tried them. There is no way they can damage gun or barrel and the shelf is still useable for other stuff
