Handgun Storage - Trigger Lock vs Cable Lock

Hello Folks,

Anyone have an argument against using a cable lock on a handgun with the slide locked back for longer term storage? Is there any negative impact on slide spring? I normally use a trigger lock but my newly installed light doesn’t leave enough room to use traditional trigger lock. Looking for alternatives.

Insight appreciated.

I use cable locks on all my pistols but they get used often, so it's not long term. You can always slowly drop the slide on the cable if you are concerned about your spring. Although springs typically wear from use, not from being compressed.

You could always remove the slide and just cable lock the frame. Not ideal if you want to keep it assembled with all the parts together, but an idea.

In theory, with modern metallurgy, there is no issue. Cycling the spring is what causes them to fatigue. Some people don't agree, however, so do your own research.

I'd have zero issue with storing cable locked handguns with the slide closed on the cable (i.e. not locked back on the slide stop). Also, if it's truly long term storage, removing the spring is an option worth considering if the above concerns you.

Yup. Nothing wrong with playing it safe, but once it's inside an already locked container, an additional lock is no longer required.

I am starting to see a trend here. "Trigger lock for pistol with light" is the new bear defense thread.
Jokes aside, I prefer to use cable locks when transporting for this reason. I have been doing so for years with no adverse affects however this is only for transport and not for storage in which case they all live in a safe with no trigger/cable locks.

A restricted requires a locking device on the firearm when in a locked container , it does not require a lock when stored in a safe/vault/room designed for the storage of firearms.
