Hey everyone. So, I am going to get my firearms licence in the next couple of weeks and was interested to hear your opinions/suggestions on which type of handgun I should look into for target shooting. As of now, I have been told that the CZ shadow is probably my best option for a beginner. Any thoughts? Much appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest starting with a .22 cal handgun if you have never used a pistol before, you won't develop the flinch some people get when they start with a larger calibre.

That being said, I would recommend a Ruger MKIII either in the luger form or the 22/45 style, or a buckmaster.

If you want to shoot cheap but not .22 you can't go wrong with a TT-33, they are fun guns and the ammo is cheap but snappy. You will need to clean the gun after each trip to the range if you use corrosive, but that is a good habit to get into anyway.

I agree with starting at a .22

Ruger is a great balance of cost/quality

Go to a gunstore and hold a bunch of different guns and decide which you like.

BTW- if you do what a previous post said and get a tt33, every gun after that will feel and shoot like a million bucks in comparison.... ;)

Buy anything in 9mm recoil is managable ammo is not too bad cost wise. If you want on the cheap I'd go Norinco in my opinion they have come a long way in the past few years. I like the Ruger SR 9mm mysely good quality, good price, good luck.

I would suggest a gun that you can buy different caliber kits.
Without spending the full amount for another gun you can just get the slide for a different caliber. On the other hand having more guns is a plus so it's really up to you ;)

I completely disagree with starting with a .22 (unless we're talking about flimsy metrosexuals that never shot before), but to each their own.

There is no such thing as a best gun. What works for you may not work for others. The main thing with shooting is NOT developing bad habits early. You will not have fun with target shooting ( your stated purpose) if you can't hit the target. If you can afford multiple guns, great! If not, hook up with people and try their guns. My suggestion, like everyone here, is start with the " metrosexual" .22. Cheaper gun, cheap ammo, minimal noise and recoil. Once you can group 1-2 inches at 10-15 yds or better, then you can upgrade to whatever catches your fancy. Have fun and be safe!

I'm in the same boat as you - if all goes well I'll have my license in a little while. Making lists of guns, doing research on prices, reliability, etc..

My first pistol is going to be a Ruger SR22. Good looking gun, and supposedly reliable as hell. Most of the videos I've watched on it have said it's fired every type of ammo they'd put into it, just fine.

IF you want to get more serious into target shooting, I'd suggest a Ruger Mark III. Longer barrel, heavier gun for a .22 .

** And don't listen to anyone saying not to go with a .22 - a .22 punches through paper JUST AS EASILY as a 9mm, 45, or 30-06. Some guys like spending 50 cents a shot on ammo, smart people like spending less. You do the math on how much it costs to fire off 200 rounds target shooting between .22 and anything else. :D

If by target you any sort of precision shooting , start with 22, look at ruger or browning buckmark. In 6 month you will know what to do next. You can customize them or move to different caliber.
The most important thing in shooting is consistency. While you be able to hit 10 ring with TT, it may limit your training options.
CZ and Glock are excellent choices, but they are combat platforms, not precision target equipment. They are commonly used for general plinking or action games.

Agrees with this without the name calling loll but you should look into .22 when it looks like you have to mortgage the house to go shooting till then get a 9mm and have some fun. It's still somewhat cheap and at least you feel something

I agree with the .22 recommendations ...either Buck Mark or Rugar. If you are set on a 9 give Grand Power a look. Decent quality from Slovakia and Dlask has the K100 MK12 on for $529 w. 2 mags

Can I asked why you disagree?

Because every single person I've met at a range who are big into .22 shooting and started with it (and shot only .22 for a long time) can't shoot anything bigger properly.

Every single person I've met who have started with a 9mm or bigger can shoot ALL calibers well.

Horse$hit.

Contrary to your personal belief calibre size doesn't make up for lack of size in the pants.

Hahaha you wouldn't believe how many smaller stature people shoot better than big dudes. And most women shoot better than men right from the start. So your "point" is irrelevant.

Says who?

I think you need to include the fact that these people who started with 9mm or bigger probably researched and were taught proper shooting grips, stance and most importantly, trigger let off. I taught my noob buddy with a 9 and .45. He grouped a 2-3 inch circle with the .45 in one session. I watched and talked him through every shot and he was a great student. He went and got his RPAL. Bought 5 guns, including a .22 in 3 month span! We now shoot together and I trust him to help sight in my guns as he has turned into a super shot.
