Handgun suggestions

Unless you have your heart set on competitive combat shooting, buy a .357 magnum revolver and shoot .38 Special in it.

The recoil is light, and factory ammunition is reasonable in price.

An inexpensive hand-loading set-up will either keep costs down or let you shoot more. Your choice. ;)
Those brass cases represent 50% of ammunition cost and will last through 7 or 8 reloads.
Lead bullets are all that you need, and are a lot cheaper than jacketed soft points.

A .22 LR auto pistol is also a good choice. Lot's of fun, with hopefully low cost ammo.

Looking to buy a handgun and wanting to hear everyone's thoughts on what make/caliber....

I give the same advise every time someone posts this question: find an indoor gun range that rents handguns. I learned that I cannot shoot polymer guns. I went to Wild West in Edmonton (I know your saying your in Surrey: any ranges that rent there fellow CGN'ers?) and tried close to a dozen guns from semi-automatics in 9mm and 45ACP to .38/.357 revolvers. I picked up a Glock model 17 (9mm) and my "pattern" was so bad the range officer almost confiscated it... tried a all metal 1911 (again 9mm) and the Range Officer was dumbfounded at how good my groups were. It turns out, if it is psychological or real, I can't shoot a polymer frame gun. Heck, all the grips I have are either solid aluminum backed rubber or wood so I have the solidity of grip on the firearm.

You could find out you can't shoot a brand, can't shoot a type, can't shoot a caliber, can't shoot a revolver/semi-auto/double action only/etc... and likely will buy that caliber and be unhappy. I would like you to get into a great and amazing sport and be happy with it.

Otherwise, hard to go wrong with a 1911 or Glock model 17 in 9mm: light recoil, cheaper ammo, easy ammo to reload (if you choose to). There are HK, S&W and a myriad of brands in 9mm, even a few revolvers with moon clips...

My first handgun (a month ago) is a Ruger Single Six Hunter.
.22 WMR provides enough noise and flash to satisfy me..For now, and .22LR is cheap to shoot.

Are you a member of a local range yet Tinman05?? Most handgun owners I have met are very willing to let you try out their handguns if you show an interest ( we all believe ours are the best, lol) and explain you are looking to purchase your first.
If you are ever out in the Abbotsford area I would be happy to let you try out a few at the Abby range, always nice to put your hands on a few before you purchase

I also recommend trying different pistols from dvc or the range on langley. It could save you alot of time & money buying different pistols (but then again that's a adventure every gun nut should experience!).

This is a great idea. :)

Glock 17, you'll get one anyway so get one right away !

Lots of ammo and proper training/practice/coach.

I don't know about the Glock :) but DT741 is right. Getting proper instruction will get you on the right path, quicker, and cheaper. Ammo gets expensive to blast through, learning on your own.

Proper instruction/coaching will fix this, so you can hit what you want with any pistol you buy.

Take Edgy up on his offer. :) You can try my Grand Power K22 X-Trim and Shadow too. I'm at Semiahmoo almost every Wed night. PM me.

I have a soft spot for .22 LR revolvers, because this was my first handgun back in the stone-age 1970s. :d

Single or double action and fun to shoot.

Get a Ruger Single Six and enjoy target sights combined with Old West nostalgia in a quality revolver.

I just noticed you're in Surrey. You should check out The Range in Langley, they've got a big selection of handguns you can rent, and they're closer than DVC.

I'd be happy to take you there and let you shoot what I've got, you pay for ammo and your range fee. I've got a Shadow and a Sig 226, and once the transfer comes through I'll have an STI Trojan in 45 as well.
