Hello folks,

do you know of any handgun training courses available in the Vancouver area?

I know Silvercore has their Handgun courses (for ~300). Are there any other options? DVC?

Thanks

Shoot better.

I got my first handgun (Buck Mark) a couple of weeks ago and would rather avoid "mastering" bad techniques by myself. Bad habits are hard(er) to correct, IMHO.

EDIT: btw, I'm a member at PoCo.

I know DVC offers handgun training courses and they were extremely helpful when I was there 2 weeks ago so I would give them a call the staff are top notch!

Then go get someone to help you with the finer points and correct any minor errors.

And bring that peashooter out to the next Speed Steel shoot at Mission. Low key fun and you'll get lots of practice with instant feedback. Not to mention no lack of opinions.... :D But seriously we have a couple of pretty good shooters there that know how to coach well. A combo that doesn't always match up. These meets are about fun and skill improvement for folks at ANY level so as bad as you may be or think you are do not feel that you're not ready for a Speed Steel match. These matches are very raw newbie to expert friendly. Just let someone know early on that you're looking for pointers and the organizer will match you up with a suitable mentor for the day.

Sounds like lots of fun! Do you required multiple mags/holster/etc?

Don't sweat the "peashooter" :D I typically shoot .22 for 1/2 the day and center fire for the other. A very happy S&W 422 and Tanfoglio Force 22 owner here. :dancingbanana:

The Speed Steel events are two separate matches before and after lunch. $15 per match so count on $30 to cover a full day's entry. Bring a bulk box of 500+ and you should be good. A perfect "no miss" event will take 150 rounds. Times two if you can stay for the full day. If you expect to miss a lot maybe bring a second bulk box that you can dip into as an emergency stash.

Extra magazines helps but if you only have the two that came with the gun no sweat. The other guys all gang up to reload for whoever is shooting. This is a really friendly setting. No holster is needed. Each pass at the stage starts from the gun held at a low ready position. Some of us use holsters for transporting the empty and cleared guns between stages.

There's an RO at the line with you and they use IPSC style commands to draw and sight, load and make ready, standby, show clear, hammer down and holster. There's a few other safety rules that mimic the more complete set used in IPSC but those will be outlined in the pre-match breifing. As I mentioned if you make yourself known as a first timer and low time handgun shooter and ask if anyone could guide you they'll soon find you a mentor for the day. But it's not a regular thing so don't be afraid to ask if you'd like that sort of guidance. Otherwise the protocal isn't hard to pick up at all if you're happy just following along.

There's a couple of other Buckmark shooters and if they are there on the same day and even in the same event I'm 100% sure they would let you use their extra magazines. We'd group you in with the other Buckmark guys just to make this possible.

Colin at PoCo.........some pro instruction.
DVC

Pro instruction, the perfect route, but if there are budget and time constraints, get Jeff Cooper's video on Handguns. Watch it 10x's or more and use his techniques at the range. Guaranteed to keep those bad habits away.
