Was there a video about a couple of guys floating down the river in Alaska? and a Grizzly attacks their boat and is shot at by one of the guys with a handgun? I tried searching but unsuccessful. thanx.

Good on him for not unloading and wasting the bear, only scareing it off..

If thats was me I would have every intent on putting that bear down with the first shot off, no warning shots, however If I fired a shot; missed and the bear turned, I would let it go

Just my .02

Damn I want CCW here in canada. Would be much lighter when camping deep in the bush than lugging around the ol' 12g.. hell who am I kidding I would still carry the 12 as well...:D

The first time this was posted I was pretty much certain the bear had been hit. Looking at it again now, I'm still of that opinion, despite the fact that people who claim to know the folks involved have stated that the bear was absolutely not hit. The bears I've tried to drive off with live fire have never reacted as quickly as that sow did. IMHO live fire is a poor deterrent if you don't intend to kill the bear, because I've never seen a bear turn tail and run from a gunshot. Cracker shells for some reason work much better. This is particularly true if the bear is intent on a target, and if you look at that bear you know she's focused on her target. If hit, the bear would react immediately, although how it might react is never a sure thing.

Remember the Cabelas video where the guide and hunter were charge by a female bear which the guide subsequently shot and killed after yelling and waving his arms to try to get her to break off. A boar was killed by the hunter, then the pair was charged by the female with what appeared to be second year cubs in the sand dunes of coastal Alaska. That video provides and interesting comparison to this one. Compare how this bear reacts to the shot with how the Cabelas bear reacted. This bear reacts exactly as the bear that was killed, except that this bear made it to cover while the bear killed in the dunes piled up a short distance from where it had been hit. As they claim that the bullet didn't find the bear, did they ensure this by following up the bear? I doubt it. I suspect that because the bear was still on its feet when it made cover, they simply assumed a miss.

I'd almost bet money that this bear was hit, how well or how poorly is the question. I'm not suggesting these guys are guilty of anything, just that they misinterpreted what they experienced. Either way, the video is a very cool example of an unprovoked or at least unintentionally provoked bear attack and one which underlines the fact that a handgun is a useful tool in the wilderness protection role.

Yeah....that's it...sure....he missed on purpose...yeah, yeah that's it....

I live where there are grizzlies on the golf course.......do you know what they call people who fire warning shots at bears??????

Bear s**t!!

John

LOL. Good one. If it was me and I knew there were bears in the area I would be armed and would have pumped that bear full of slug. I just meant that the guy could have kept firing when he did not.Good restraint.

Bear was most certainly hit, but they probably stated otherwise to avoid complications with 'killing mama bear' crowd.

A handgun is a useless defense against an angry sow grizzly protecting her cubs. You can empty all six shoots into them and they'll still take you down. I'd bet most standing in a river boat can't place an effective shot on a barn. She'll go up against a male twice her size... and half the time its a mock charge. I sleep better at night with my shotgun knowing how powerful they are...and how hard they die. The boaters should have made more noise once they saw the cubs. Neverless, i'd still like to carry my handgun in the bush anyway, the shotgun makes casting a line a pain.

One bullet in the brain and there isn't a mammal on the planet that does't drop like a rage doll including your Grizzley bear. Your shotgun works better but the Grizzley's heart beats once very slowly so at close range you better hope for a brain/nervous system hit or you will be found dead along side a dead bear. As for a handgun such as the .44Mag or larger .454Casull it beats running and rocks.

Take Care

In this video do we not see "a handgun being a USEFUL defense against an angry sow protecting her cubs"??

I'm not saying it's the #1 choice, nor am I a pro on this topic, but I think this video gives some proof that a handgun might not always be a "useless" tool for bear protection.
