handguns and first timers (PICs added)

I've taken my fair share of chickadees to the range and I've yet to see anything of the sort. They'd get a thorough tongue-lashing if I caught them doing that!! (...did that sound wrong?)

The arched back, however, is very common.

Not wrong, just naughty :D

The arched back is very common when your giving the women a thorough tongue lashing

I've tried expiriementing with an intentionally arched back... surprisingly it actually makes it easier to line up the sights. The sights are farther away from your eyes, so the spaces on the side for the posts to line up is smaller, and focusinng is alot easier.

For newbies I think it has something to do with the shoulder muscles. I find when I get tired of shooting groups all day with my handguns, I sometimes catch myself going into a bit of an arch.

I would guess that the ladies are having trouble with reaching the trigger because the grip is too large (Heck, I've got gynecologist's fingers, and I have trouble reaching around a beretta!), and / or they just lack the grip strength period to pull the DA trigger.

Thus, they use both fingers to make it easier.

One of my fellow firearms instructors at work claims that grip strength is THE most important issue with pistol shooting - He will not even bother coaching a weak shooter until they demonstrate that they can pull a DAO trigger 100 times strong hand, and minimum 10 times weak hand. I'm not sure if I lend THAT much weight to strength, BUT... It is awfully tough to maintain a sight picture if the muzzle dips every time you try and squeeze the trigger...

Just my thoughts...

This is probably the best "First Timer" picture I have on hand.
