Hope those who think handguns have no place in the bush read this. If it saves one life.

OK so a Antique Pistol that can be LEGALY packed in the Bush
(Well in B.C cause we dont have #### CFOs)
Would not help at all i guess?
Be honest do ya think my 45 70 Springfields trapdoor Perscribed Antique Pistol would not put the fuker down!
Think again!
Ive shot this gun and A Big bear would go DOWN!

That's a cool gun and must be a lot of fun to shoot...

I'm asuming your loading black powder 45-70 400gr to 500gr loads out of that thing they must be doing about 1000fps.

Yes sir I will have to agree with you that definately should put a black bear down for keeps.

Just think about this though... in a 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull you get 6 shots of 405gr WLNGC's @ 1400fps

Modern technology... :canadaFlag:

I loaded a ruduced Pyrodex load and wheatlets.
If i miss with the Trapdoor i got my Antique Remigton 1871 in 50 70 as back up :D
she aint finished yet but we just put a new 10 inch barrel on it. its gona be black with new wood when done.
Im keeping all the orignal stuff for it of course but i agree for protection new is better than worn out.
I shot it with the old worn 8 inch barrel and this gun will also drop near anything i figger. Quite fast to reload to.

I do like the looks of that. A number of years back there was a guy, Al Goric (or something like that), from Port Angeles Washington that was 'hot & heavy' into that style of handgun. I always thought it would be a fun singleshot to 'play' with.

Crazy Davey -

With regards to the scene on the belt buckle - any guesses as to the effectiveness of a knee to the gonads of that bear? Probably better then beating it on the head with an empty gun.

The combination of the two will easily take down the biggest grizzer bear. The empty gun to the head is just a way of saying "WTF were you thinking trying to take me on?" ;) :D

You use the butt of your empty pistol to break his teeth out , then drive your fist down his throat , grab him by the tail and turn him inside out .:bsFlag: :D

I've been carrying my .44 at work for a while now, but I've never got to be terribly comfortable with heavy loads. I recently purchased a 10mm that will likely replace the 44.

The fact of the matter is, thousands of people are in the bush in BC every day with nothing more than a can of bear spray. I am happy that I can carry my bear spray AND a last resort firearm, because after all, its a heck of a lot better than a pointy stick or throwing rocks.

Would it work with a 357 also.I always wondered if a 357 mag could take down a black bear.

Black Bear are not actually that tough. Native Indians/Inuit etc. still take them to this day with .22lr.

Not that I agree with it, but their technique is to get a broadside shot, and they time it when the forepaw on the facing side is being extended. The rib cage is opened up then, and there is good chance of getting into the vitals without a rib slowing down the bullet.

I say the more gun the better when your life is in danger (.44mag or slug), but a .357 with a heavier, jacketed bullet would be ok with me.

A 357 will/can kill a bear but we're not talking hunting bears here.

As a charge stopping round the 357 no matter what bullet weight or design doesn't have what it takes to put a bear down fast.

Get something that can deliver a 240gr plus bullet at about 1200fps.

I can't see anything other than a csn hit/busting both sholders would stop a charging bear(either .357 or 44mag)? With me it might go something like this... BANG BANG>>> Run like your about to be set on fire!!

I just avoid staying in tents when the bears are around. I much prefer to sleep in the open when I can see what's around me. Sucks when it's raining, but that's life.

I like this advice. When my family canoes on Lake superior for two weeks or so (Pukasaw to Wawa-ish, well, in that area) I am always freaking out about bears. We do have bear spray, and i know that there are no grizzly bears. My senses seam to hone in, and i get a "super hearing" effect and every little freeking branch crack just freaks the #### out of me. Last year on our trip i wasnt so worried, most likely because i had done some research etc. (and had "grown up" or matured a bit more) We keep the dog in the tent with us as well, she is a GREAT help for warning us if something is near.
