I read many posts on CGN where people are asking " is such and such a good hand gun or as good as.....

I would like to Instigate a good old whats best.

I have relatively very little experience owning a hand gun. I personay like my Norc 1911 because its cheap, well built (have been told that they are forged from rail way ties)? and shoot well for $350.

There are many people who state that they are crap, poorly built and do not stand up the popular brands.

I am signing up for Black Badge and have been told "don't bring your norc as it will fall apart"... I personally doubt this.

Everyone rants and raves over glock, sig, cz, wilson combat.....

All I Would like to know is what Handgun would fit bill for a survival, accurate & durable weapon. What can you comfortably trust?

I can trust a Toyota over a chev, dodge or ford any day because it will keep going and going. I could care a less about how shiny it is or estheticaly pleasing.

Is A glock better than all other composites? if so why.

I am only interested in the common sense behind why.

A toyota is better then a Chev, Dodge, or Ford for two reasons. The Japs built it and in most cases they cost more then the others do. You get what you pay for in most cases.

Define survival? running around in the woods looking for food or self defense? If you're looking for a survival gun in a traditional sense you need a rifle.

If you want something reliable, my favorites are Beretta 92, CZ75 and Glock 17/22 and 19/23.
 
That norc will likely do you fine for your black badge.

I will be receiving my first norc 1911 .45 tomorrow so I cannot speak from first hand experience, however the general consensus is that they are the best centerfire pistol you can get for under $500 and can be very accurate.

Have a look at some of the 1911 forums in the states, some of them would sell their left nut for a norc 1911, they are claimed to be the absolute best affordable base guns for custom builds.

Since this is Canada and we can't shoot anything but targets with handguns, use whatever fits your budget and is comfortable in your hand.

If I could only have one hand gun, it would likely be a smith 686 or a glock 17.

If you are looking for a survival weapon, get a 12ga shotgun and a rifle. I like the mossberg maverick 88.

I will not go to great lengths to describe why; but to answer this question yourself, study the internals of the Glock versus all the other composite guns. They are either more complicated or some form of copy of it (and being a copy means trying to work its way around what Glock created).

I sold my Glock but not because it isn't a great gun. I just don't need a reliable workhorse gun. I don't have needs for a self-defense weapon. I just wanted a nicer trigger feel for hole-punching paper. If I needed a single gun that was do-all and an absolutely reliable consistant pistol I would choose the Glock.

Think of the engineering that goes into a pistol. Many manufacturers sell guns well above the $900 and its not uncommon for a pistol to cost upwards if not more than $1500. What you are paying for is quality. The tolerances, the fit and finish of the firearm and durability. Glocks are like the most common gun in the world, but hold this in mind: if you had to supply a large force of people (police) with a duty gun, it would be more cost effective to buy something cheaper that is reliable. This is why glock get used more than Sig for example. Norinco firearms are all clones. They, to me, are like fake rolex watches. it may look like a rolex, but take acloser look, and hell no. Its a piece of junk. I had a friend that purchased a norinco AR-15 clone. We went to the range, and he tried my STAG. Even he admitted he could see the difference in the quality. The difference in a pistol is like the difference between a luxury sedan and a smart car.
For now, your Norinco may serve you very well. You can learn some fundimentals with it and practice. Once you have increased your skills and you are a more proficient shooter with more exposure to what else is out there, you will develop a more decerning taste, and upgrade from where you are today.
Ive had glocks, Walther P99's, various Berettas and Sig. I would have to say my favorite are Beretta and Sig, SIG being number one.
 
I think in a sense (and this goes for a lot of things nowadays) your norinco is going to perform and most likely perform WELL but after you try something like the CZ or Glock pistols the small differences that make them slightly more expensive then become your new expectation for all handguns you're going to purchase in the future.

But unlike computers where they get outdated every year or so, a well maintained gun will last you a LONG time so why not spend the extra few hundred dollars to get that "perfect" gun. If you've tried a lot of different guns and the norinco is the one you like best then great! but if theres one that feels better or whatever it may be like i said why not spend that extra bit

I trust it because I've been through multiple courses with this and it worked even when caked with dirt and talcum powder like dust all over the internals.

Do your research regarding reliable brands, buy one, shoot the crap out of it, do some tough courses under hard conditions and if it works you know you can trust that pistol. Repeat test with each individual pistol.
 
If I had onn gun and needed to rely on it, would probably be a S&W 357 revolver. Don't need magazines, less things to fail and jam. Having said that I only own semi's
 
I have 2 Norinco 1911's (9mm and .45), a Para 1911 and 3 Glocks (17, 21, and 21SF).
Both my Norinco's have been 100% reliable. I think a lot of that is due to the loose tolerances, I have no idea how many rounds either of them have because I don't count rounds on anything but my precision rifles but I have had zero issues. They are fairly accurate, they eat any ammo I feed them and feed from any mag I stick in the well.

I just got the Para and haven't shot it yet but it does feel much tighter and better built than the Norc's and the guy I bought it off of told me it has been 100% for the 500 rounds he put through it but time will tell.

My Glock's are typical Glock's and have lived up to their reputation for reliability. They have never jammed or had any issues aside from my Gen 4 G17 failed to feed twice while my girlfriend was shooting it but after I corrected her grip and explained to her why it was doing that it was 100% from that point on.
They are all reasonably accurate and are easy to maintain.

I had an HK USP Tactical and it was really nice but I don't think it was so much nicer that it justified the price tag.

Considering the price of used pistols I would buy a used Glock in whatever caliber you like or a used S&W M&P series. Both can be had for around $600 and sometimes cheaper.
Another good option is the IWI Jerico which Frontier has on sale right now for $570 new.

Good luck with whatever you buy or use. I wouldn't listen to all the negativity about Norinco though. They are cheap and they work and for some that is all that matters.
 
I dont think there is anything wrong with Norincs. In fact I'd say you even get more than you pay for. So they are all a clones but so are all the modern 1911s. I have a Grizzly shotty made by Norinco, 870 clone. Works perfectly fine can't complain for what I paid.

I like to equate guns to motorbikes. I started buying Japanese - quality, reliability, performance for the buck. However, if I was blind folded and rode Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha (I'd crash) I could not tell the difference - no character.

My first gun was the Steyr M9, not a common pistol, has FTE issues, very little aftermarket stuff - but I love it. I think it's a very nice looking and unconventional piece.

Some people buy for looks, some for brand, and of course some have a budget, but like motorbikes, it all about the ride and being on the road / range.

(HK is the answer btw, but you got lots of reading to do)
