Handguns...worth the effort?

I must honestly say, in my humble opinion, that the current process is SO much easier than the old restricted weapon registration system.

Less leg work that's for sure..
I remember buying pistols in the 80's it was..

Go buy pistol.
Go to your local police firearms officer with the bill of sale and get an ATT or rather "conveyance permt"
Go back to where you pistol was purchased and p/u said pistol.
Then take said pistol back to the Firearms officer for "verification" and a "look-see"
Then after that an ATT/permit would be issued to take the gun home...
I bought a pistol at leBarons on Young st.... Between driving back and forth between the store PRP HQ and my home it took the better part of my day to get it all done.
Nowadays... Pick up the phone. pay with Visa and a few days later a gun shows up in my mailbox....

Yeah, it is a hassle but i think it's worth it. I look at it like ### with your wife or girlfriend - takes a bit of effort and planning, but it sure beats jerking off. ;)

It seems my memory is better than I thought. I thought it was something like all of that. And although all of that is do-able, I can't help wondering why there are so many cgn'ers who are into hanguns. I'm not looking to walk down the street twirling my Dirty Harry cannon on my index finger, but jeez louise, thats a lot of hoops to jump through.

It's almost like our Government doesn't want us to have handguns at all.

That's exactly right. This is part of an intentional policy of discouraging handgun ownership.

And that's exactly WHY I got a handgun.

Yes, it was a damn hassle, but it pissed me off that some bureaucrat was making policy with the intended purpose of hassling me. So I was determined not to give in.

If we let the government discourage us and shrink the number of gun owners, it will make the eventual attempt to ban all guns from civilian ownership that much easier.

There is also the issue of what will happen if/when civilian handgun ownership is banned. There is a good chance that those who own them already, for a certain a number of years, may get to keep them. One more reason to get one now, not put it off.

Oh, and frankly it wasn't that much trouble in the end, and subsequent handgun purchases are no trouble at all. And it's a $hitload of fun!

Its worth the hassle any time the government does not want me to have something that's when I want it more,I got my first handgun in 74 and have never looked back.

Wow...the cops should just track VISA transactions for all the shootings in the Jane/Finch and downtown Toronto areas. Plus, the Range Club memberships in the area should narrow down the list of suspects....wouldn't it?

i cant tell if this is a thinly veiled reference to our flawed registry or a subtle troll attempt.

I had my Rpal since 2000 Never fired , bought or own a handgun before Fall 2009
I took the course because I like to have all options available even if I dont use them.
in 2009 I wanted to get into AR-15 precision shooting. I was told that before buying a AR I should get into the Restricted system by buying a handgun. So I did and Got hook.
I still dont have my AR yet but I own a few handguns and make at least one trip to the range per week.
Handguns are much more fun then rifle in my opinion.

"...can't help wondering why there are so many cgn'ers who are into handguns..." More shooting. Far less fuss to shoot handguns than it is rifles. You have to belong to a club, not a range. Most shooters are at their club at least one evening per week.
There are several good ones close to Rockwood. Guelph, Cambridge, et al. (Saunders Bakery butter tarts. Yummy.)

Handguns...worth the effort?

One word answer?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

Also, there's power in numbers. If 25% of Canadians owned a restricted firearm, it would mean political suicide for any elected representative who picked a fight with them.......

It's worth while getting your RPAL anyway. You never know what laws will change next.
Buy a really nice handgun and enjoy shooting it. You'll get hooked quick enough.

I used to be a member of Gunnutz. Recently rejoined. I read every post from all the members. 99% have good points to say. Some things have a personal feeling.

Handguns or long guns? Doesn't really matter, I have shot just about everything ever made. Slingshots, bows, crossbows, pistols, black rifles, F Class rifles, etc.. and am good at it!

I totally agree, get your RPAL, own what you want to own. Shoot what you want to shoot. Wish I had a prohibited licence. Damn, I would have had all my ol' man's guns when he died.

Get a gun that you have a feel for. Doesn't have to be an expensive gun as long as it shoots straight.

Agreed, join a club, help out the rest of us, strength in numbers as they say.

your restricted handgun license also lets you buy some long guns that the unrestricted crowd can only dream about . i got mine as the more of us that have them the more political clout we have or am i the one who is dreaming .

I sympathize with you folks and all the bumpf you have to go through.
However it did take a month and a half to get the paperwork processed for the Vickers. and roughly a month for the BREN.

But I didn't have to take a course or belong to a gun club. The only time I had to take a two day course was for the CCW, and could have slept through half of it, thoughI didn't.

x2. I foolishly waited until a couple of years ago to get my RPAL because when I lived in Vancouver I "was too busy" etc. If I had, as in the Nike ad, "just done it" 20 years ago I could have had all sorts of things Big Brother now feels are far too dangerous/evil for the hoi polloi to own- like anything with a 4" barrel. I cry every time I see a Luger come up on the EE. Once I got mine I bought a S&W 625 off the EE to assuage my conscience;)

Get yer RPAL before the next bunch of hoplophobic do-gooders has their way.

It's worth the wait grasshoppa. :)
Same opinion here! I really enjoy shooting my revolvers the most.
I have alot of S&W sixguns, a few Colts and one Dan Wesson with a really lllonnngggg barrel. (38, 357 & 44s too)
Life is not complete with at least one 1911 in 45 ACP.
I have a very accurate Ruger Mk II bull barrel & one Star Model F in .22 for my daughters and nephew to shoot as well.
This may be the year I take up ISSF Free Pistol too. (22 LR @50 meters)
The fun never ends IMHO! ;)

... and what I can (and more importantly can't) do with it.

unless you want to engage in some kind of shooting sports you won't be a ble to do much with it. It is all just a game I will never understand. I own many handguns and owned many more. Blown away 1000's of rounds and ended up having just a few hi-end target pistols and one of IPSC kind. You will be honing skills you will never need and having equipment you will never use. Winning a match or two is another story...;)
