I have Pal non-restricted and restricted, would like to purchase and handgun. do I still have to belong to a gun club to get one? I am thinking of joining one, but can I get one first? I,m in burlington, thinking of joining BRRC, would like to visit some night to see the deal, do they allow visitors?

You have to be a member of a gun club before the CFO will transfer a restricted (handgun or rifle) to you.

Don't know about BRRC, but most clubs have set times where people can visit and get shown around. Give them a call.

I just bought a pistol without belonging to a gun club and it ony took a few days for the transfer to be approved. I thought that was pretty cool. I always heard it takes a lot longer if you're buying from a personal owner rather than a dealer.

Let me be the first to guess, you DON'T live in Ontario. (or Quebec)

Come out to BRRC any evening between 7PM and 9PM (except Saturday) and a director will be onsite and can give you all kinds of information.

I do - In Toronto too no less. I just had a restricted transferred to me. This is also the first one & technically I'm not a club member yet. I'm in the safety course right now, but when the transfer was done the deposit wasn't even paid yet.

That is great, hopefully they keep it up. Or maybe they are just putting on a good show because they know their days are numbered.

Did the CFC ask you the question about purpose for purchasing?

She asked me if it was for target shooting or colleting. I just said it was for target shooting and we moved on. The lady I was speaking with really sounded grumpy and that she hated her job. It was funny when she asked me where I'll be keeping it, I said that I'll keep it in my gun safe. She kind of snapped at me (like NO YOU IDIOT) will it be kept at your address. LOL.

All in all though, a big thanks to everyone involved for letting this go through. I also heard that Ontario was one of the strictest Provinces. I just took a shot and it went through without a hitch.

Unless they have changed their protocols, she was also supposed to ask WHICH club you belong to. You were lucky.

Here in Manitoba the CFO requires a copy/fax of your club membership card.On the other hand, they usually approve restricteds the same day.I got an email from a dealer the other day saying they had the transfer approved in ten minutes. Something of a record for them.
