Took it down the road to do some blasting. Recoil was no worse than a 12g with slugs.

I shot the 4x4 in the pic, bullet drilled right through with no expansion, the water jugs didn't fare so well, can't wait to try it on gophers, I actually bought it to replace my 17hmr;) kudos to the wife on some good pics.

I have a gun mag with a review of this rifle and round combo. Author said if you load them anywhere near max, the recoil is BRUTAL. Once they are down-loaded a bit, the recoil subsided significantly. IIRC, he got kissed by the scope on the first (full power) shot.
 
I got mine a month or so ago from Epps. Where did you get the hammer spur?

So far, I haven't had much luck working up a load, though I somewhat suspect that my ScopeChief VI 1.5-4.5 might be packing it in.

The recoil isn't bad at all. The pad and stock design is very effective at controlling the recoil of an ounce slug at 2000 fps. Like the 375 H&H, the recoil is more like a push than a kick, and I found the gun quite comfortable while working up loads from the bench
 
how can the recoil be anywere neer as much as a 12 ga with slugs.... The 500 SW is way smaller in every aspect....
edited did a little bit of math its closer but still the 12 ga has it hands down.

Look at it this way...

1 ounce = 437 grs

What weight of slugs are available 1 ounce and 1 1/8 ounce loaded to low shotgun compatable pressures.

What bullet weights are available for a 500S&W I believe that a 500 S&W has weights from 300gr to 700gr and loaded to pressures that could blow up a shotgun.

Heavy weight bullet + high pressures = recoil
 
I was shooting Winchester Platinum 400gr hollow points factory stuff. I have shot a lot of slugs, IMO the recoil is comparable, the factory stock is quite good, very little muzzle jump, was worried about the swivel stud in the forend but it wasn't a problem.
Overall impression is a quite controllable short range big bore thats fun to shoot for under $300, only down side is factory ammo runs $55/box/20 but I reload and am planning to get into bullet casting.

Recoil is dependant on powder charge weight, muzzle velocity, bullet weight, and rifle weight. Pressure does not figure into the equation. If ya give me the data for the four criteria above, I'll give you the ft lbs of recoil energy and the velocity of the recoil.

For instance, a 300 WM with a 180 gr bullet at 3000 fps and a charge of 80 gr of powder in a 8.5 pound rifle will give 31.28 ft pounds of energy at 15.39 fps (velocity of the rifle to the rear.)

Take the same rifle, same cartridge, except make the bullet weigh 150 grains and travelling 3300 fps with a charge weight of 84 gr gives a recoil energy of 29.52 and a recoil velocity of 14.95 fps.

The lighter bullet makes the rifle come back slower and lighter. Pressure would be the same (more or less).

the 500 burns from 30 to 40 grains of powder, and shoots a 440 grain bullet (~1oz) at approximately 2000 fps from the 22" barrel. The rifle weighs about 6.5lbs when scoped
 
Thanks for the info, I was curious about this rifle. Ammo is expensive. Are there any reasons, other than the "cool factor", that would make you choose the 500 S&W over the 45-70? Thanks.
 
Given the low and high data for the above, here is what a recoil calculator yields:

440 gr bullet at 2000 fps with 30 gr powder charge in 6.5 lb rifle --- 50.82 ft lbs of free recoil energy travelling at 22.44 fps. Pretty stout and pretty sharp.

440 gr bullet at 2000 fps with 40 gr powder charge in 6.5 lb rifle --- 55.61 ft lbs of free recoil energy travelling at 23.47 fps. Stouter and sharper.

Now, I would add that with the same bullet and the same powder with a 10 gr difference in the charge weight, the velocity should be substantially different. The data you provided shows the same velocity. What it does show effectively is the effect that powder charge has on the recoil with ALL the other areas being constant.
