Handi 500SW (pics)(shooting pics up)

Thanks for the info, I was curious about this rifle. Ammo is expensive. Are there any reasons, other than the "cool factor", that would make you choose the 500 S&W over the 45-70? Thanks.

3:

1: It's different.
2: it's bigger (.500 vs. .458)
3: try to find *factory* 45-70 ammunition packing 4000+ ft.lbs (if you care about factory ammo)

depending on the load, I picked up between 250 and 350 fps (over the pistol velocities) with 330 gr. cast, 440 cast, 350 jacketed and 500 jacketed.

In his defense, you DID say:

how can the recoil be anywere neer as much as a 12 ga with slugs.... The 500 SW is way smaller in every aspect....
edited did a little bit of math its closer but still the 12 ga has it hands down.

a 440 grain slug at 2,000 fps is moderately more than any 3" 12ga load I've ever seen, and even if we go with your own numbers, they're neck and neck. A far cry from 'anywere neer as much'

That H&R that you bought at wholesale sports in Calgary was supposed to goto me here in Edmonton. I believe you bought it around 10:00am last week. I had it on back order for over a year and a half and they messed up not calling me. Not a big deal though cause I re-ordered for another one and they called me the next day. So they must have got a few new ones on the next truck in. :D It is now here with my name on it and I will be picking it up tomorrow.
Range report will be soon..

Well considering the one I bought had been on order for over a year from the Lethbridge store guess I just got lucky on which order got filled first. Are you going to scope yours? Picked up a limbsaver to try out on it.

I was told by the mail desk clerk that only one came in and it went to the Calgary store. I asked about other stores and she said that only one was recieved and the rest were on back order. Kind of funny they can't keep track of there stock. I was just fishing to see how accurate my information was. :)

You guys need to check out the Kick-Eez recoil pads there is nothing else like them on the market.

Let me put it this way I would never buy a Limbsaver over a Kick-Eez I have 6 or 7 Kick-Eez and no Limbsavers on my heavy recoiling rifles.

Good enough, I'm not in to handloading yet, but I figure the 45-70 would be a good reason to start. The 500 S&W has definitely a cool factor to it, but on the other hand, the 45-70 is a timeless classic... I just might have to get one of each!:D
