I was wondering if anyone had tried to load the lee 155 grain bullet to 30-30 levels. I mean you can get 2100 fps out of the sks with H322. You would only have to bump up the Fps to about 2300 for it to equal a winchester silver tip.

I think I will heat treat some cast w/w in the oven and give it a try?

Anyone ever use hot loads in a SKS? Does anyone else hand load for the sks?

I've never loaded anything over 125gr for my SKS. I load 123gr Hornady SP with 26.5 gr of RL7. So far the results are quite pleasing. By doing so you still can shoot milsurp ammo for practicing.

do NOT 'push the envelope' with handloading in general, and with the SKS in particular if you value your appendages and eyes. It's not a particularly strong action, and doesn't have especially good gas-handling abilities in the even of a rupture.

You're just asking for trouble

So stick with the 155grainer at 2000 then. Well at least that is more than enough to take down deer and beer with :)

PLEASE SPARE THE BEER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least let me drink them first, then I'll give you the cans back to shoot :D

It's a plenty strong action, it's tip-lock bolt is a scaled down version of the Russian PTRS anti tank rifle. But it's gas system, and pistons where built for the 123 - 150 grain bullets...I wouldn't go beyond 150.
