I'm fairly new to handloading for the .375 H&H (and handloading in general), but I like shooting it quite a bit.

I have made up some loads with 270 gr. Hornady Interlocks (so so) and 235 gr. Speer (pretty fast and accurate). I have R19, Varget and H4350 on hand. I'm waiting for the 235 gr. Barnes TSX to show up - haven't found any in Canada yet.

I have a couple of boxes of 260 gr. Nosler Accubonds to load up - looking for an all around hunting load. Or has anyone hunted with this bullet?
Any good loads to suggest? Any genraral tips for loading the .375?

thanks
Pete

It would depend on what was being hunted.

The 235 Speers were designed for smaller deer sized game. For larger game the good old Nosler Partition would be my 1st choice if it shot well.

My favorite load was 78grs IMR4350 and the Hornday 270gr SP. Would shoot MOA all day long. This is a compressed load and I used the Lee factory crimp die.

I've just started reloading for & shooting the .375 H&H and haven't used it on game yet but I've had good accuracy results with the load similar to that quoted by 444shooter;:)
Hornady 270gr SP
R-P cases, trimmed 2.845"
CCI 250 primer
77 - 78grs of IMR 4350 (Hornady 3rd edition manual)
COL 3.570"
Crimped, RCBS dies
I was just out shooting mine a couple of days ago, time to reload now and I will be using a couple of Hornady 300 grainers. The 300gr BTSP & the 300gr RNIB, CCI250 primers & IMR 4350.
You mentioned the Nosler 260gr Accubond, also RL 19 powder. I haven't used them, yet, but I see in the 5th edition Nosler manual lists loads with that weight of bullet & powder, 76 - 80grs. I notice they have a * by the 80gr load signifying that was the most accurate they tested with that powder.
General reloading tips, from my limited experience with this cartridge? # 1, crimp. #2, enjoy. ;)

thanks for all the advice,
I'm quite enamoured with the calibre
on game I've used 270 gr. fed classic RN (couldn't wait for my dies to arrive) on a black bear at about 30m - very effective, then a 270 gr. Hornady PSP Interlock on a dall's sheep at 225m - also worked, and very little meat damage despite the huge hole - carrying it for moose now

on reloading
seems I should learn how to crimp, and I need to get a chrony
I have also had some problems with case necks squishing when I tried compressed loads. any idas why?

Pete

arcticpete,

70 gr of 4064 and the 270 Gr Hornady spitzer yields this

on our big Yukon moose and bears.

I had good results from two different .375s using Speer 285gr Grand Slams and IMR4350. They both grouped very well and easily attained well over 2700fps without any pressure signs. I never shot any game with that load, but when I do, I'm sure the results will be great.

Any experience with the Hornady 300gr BT?

Very accurate, but I never shot any ame with it.

I probably wouldn't use it on heavy, heavy game after reading loits of horror stories on AR aboutthat bullet.

I am sure it woud kill bear and deer, though.:)

I recently found the "holy grail" for my 375. 67 G Varget with a 270 grain TSX with a CCI Mag primer in a Fed Nickle case. Three shot, one hole group at 100 yards. I wondered if this was a fluke until I did it again on the next 3 shot group. Pleased (to say the least) I left the range and when I went shooting the next weekend with a buddy, you guessed it - two more one hole groups :) :) :)

Have you shot any game with that bullet? It was very accurate in one of my .375s too, but testing it on wet newsprint turned me off that bullet for good. I was chronographing them at ~2650 fps and shooting into wet newsprint at 90 yards. The bullets harldy opened at all. What would happen at 200 or 300 yards? I don't know because I didn't bother to test them after their sad performance at the closer range.

IIRC Whynot? had some problems with the 250gr TSX on game and has since abandoned them.

edited to add pictures:

The bullet on the left is a .284" 160gr XLC. Notice that it opened up to the same diameter as the .375!
