Hands on 'Shorty' M305 review.

I posted this on he canada ammo thread and thought I would add it here too if thats ok..

I took the rifle apart and so far it looks really good!!.

It has some good and bad points that I have noticed so far. The op rod guide is loose and the rod is misaligned (easy fix). The gas cylinder lock gets nice and tight where it’s supposed to so no shims are required on mine.
I like how the front sight is on straight for starters …and the post is higher than the ears and sloped towards the muzzle on top. The shorter barrel version of m-14 requires a taller front sight and it’s good to see they addressed that issue.
The flashider is spot welded on regretfully ,On my first poly I couldnt see the spot welds but it was definately welded on but I pounded it off with no damage to it so hopefully this one will too as I have another Springfield muzzle brake coming .
The spot welds on this flashider are quite visable though so I will see soon I guess.
The metal on my Shorty looks less porous and the machine work in spots is smoother.
Especially on the bottom of the gas cylinder, the inside top receiver and the op rod guide all look like they have nicer smoother finish The barrel is more gray then my Polytechs, where as the rear sights, gas spindle valve, and the front gas plug are black on the shorty.Well they painted half the plug...lol
The rear sight elevation worked very well but the windage knob would only work in one direction (Right) .I took them off and they were oily but looked fine , I have USGI rear sight for it so into the drawer it goes for later .

I am going to Hungrys clinic this weekend so they will be on the range Sunday :)

The better machining on the Shorty compared to my Polytechs, the shorty is on the right in all the pics. The bottom of the gas cylinder on the polys have large casting marks as well as the inside roof of the receiver and the op rod guide is less porous on the Shorty as well.

The mags are limited with silver rivets on mine and overall I am impressed with what I see about the rifle and the few issues mine has are minor really. This rifle and ammo deal was fantastic !
Thanks Canam for bringing these in for us .....and I will stop whining on here about not getting mine now ...;)

Don't buy ONE  Buy THREE of them! See you at the clinic this weekend. I have to examine that shorty!

Cheers and thanks for that report!

Why is it such a big deal that the flash hiders are welded on? Do they need to be removed or changed? Is there a problem with leaving them in place?

Later edit: Well, I got mine... :D :D :D I haven't done much with it besides give it a basic strip and wiped most of the oil off. I guess the finish on these rifles could be a little smoother, but then if it were, they'd probably charge double for them. Probably be worth it too...as far as I can tell, this is a really nice piece of work. Nothing obviously loose or problematic, but then I don't know much about the M-14. I'm looking forward to learning tho'.

So what are the little ju-ju bags attached to the trigger guard and the sling swivels?

Aha! There's stuff in the buttstock...that's why it's rattling so much. There's a catch on the little trapdoor, so don't pry it up with a screwdriver or anything [cough]. The oil bottle and brush/cleaning rod handle [or whatever it is] comes out easy...the other thing wrapped in cloth, not so much... Working on it...

Update: Took off buttplate to get cleaning rod out. A little tricky getting the plate back on, but it _does_ fit properly. It would be nice if the cleaning rod was made of brass instead of steel...or at least finished smooth...

Why do they weld the flash hiders on? Whats the point? They are made to come off, should you need to remove your gas cylinder after all...

Is it necessary to disassemble and aggressively clean the gas piston/cylinder and bolt before firing? I wiped off a lot of oil but I haven't done more than a basic field strip. I can't see any welds on the flash hider, nor do I have the tools to remove it...

I could just be an optical illusion, but it looks like your flash hider is not machined correctly, it looks like it is not timed right with the barrel, and/or the gas cylinder.

I posted this in the order thread too, but heres some video I took today with th rifle and the Norinco ammo. And some pumpkins. :D

Mine was to, I could not find a thread on fixing the problem so this is what I did. I removed the pin put some punch marks on the barrel where the band sits, coated the surfaces with red locktite, alinged the guide/band so everything lined up, let the locktite set, then I redilled the pin hole out oversize and made a pin out of .136 drillrod. staked it in place. Seems to have done the trick.

Guess I should be posting this in Optics but figured it would get more mileage here.

Anyone try a Vortex SPARC on a Shorty? Will it stand up?

Damn it guys, I've owned a few of these things in the past (my first had an "AL" serial number), but watching that video has me wanting a shortie, seems like just the right gun for the wet coast rain forest.

The price is right on them too... I'm not sure I need another m14!

Fixed it for you ...:)

I just got the Shorty and Ammo deal, it was a fantastic price .
I used to think 1 of the M-305,s was enough , then I had to have 2 of them cuz Hungry said so... and now my new Shorty makes 3
