I'm looking for experiences with the best for the money hard cases for rifles longer than the standard 36" tactical cases.
Egg crate vs pluck n pull style. Brand vs brand.

What I'm looking for is a hard case to protect my rifle during rough transport via truck trailer atv sled and kayak transport and the transitions between various methods of transport.
The cheap plastic Flambeau and pelican cases have not stood up well with use. They've always protected the rifle but they themselves break. I want a more durable longer lasting better quality case and online comparisons seem rather lacking so I ask here.

The extreme series from cabelas seems to be a stout case and it uses steel latches. Nanuk is another one to look at. Not as cheap, but built to take a beating.

I've been eyeing the Pelican Vault v770, 50" interior dimensions. Handled them at Cabela's, they seem quite rugged. I tried to (but wasn't) able to pop the latches open by direct force and by twisting, but I dropped it in the aisle twice and also managed to knock a bunch of other cases over with the one I was handling, so there's that. My wife was impressed the case survived it's encounter with me. Cabela's staff was... less than impressed. Oh well.

Princess Auto impact resistant cases. They go on sale regularly.

For the money, they’re great. Only cons - they’re heavy and the label is a female dog to get off.

I was looking at the vault v7xx series and thought they'd suit my purposes. Plus they come in colors that match my chassis's for easy identification. Nothing else local. Huntshield cases aren't long enough for my longer barreled rifles
Ideally I'd like 4. One cut for each rifle
I've heard great things about nanuck but haven't seen one in person yet
As for -20 I know cheaper plastic hard cases fail quickly

I'll second the Cabela's Extreme cases. For what you pay they're very well built. They're heavy as ####, but that's the trade-off I guess.

Lately I've found myself going towards heavy duty padded soft cases more often. Little lighter and easier to deal with than a hard case. I picked up a couple of the Savior Equipment 'Urban Warfare' (Kind of a ridiculous name, I hope they'll still let me use them when they find out I'm only going to the range) double rifle cases. The padding between the guns and on the outsides is thick enough that the case could bounce around and not hurt anything, and they have a bunch of useable storage on the front- big lockable front compartment for a pistol or two, and pockets for mags or ammo or whatever. I like them a lot.

Genuine Pelican Protector cases don't get brittle in the cold, and are built like a tank.
Cabelas Xtreme cases are rebranded Boyts. They're quality.
I have a Pelican 1750 and a V800 Vault. The Vault is longer, wider and deeper internally, but the case itself has a lighter build than the 1750. The lid flexes more, its water resistant and not waterproof like the 1750. It's also substantially cheaper.
Buddy has a big Nanuk, superb case. Every bit as good as the 1750, built like a tank.

I hate egg crate foam. Pick and pluck is OK, but only if it's Pelican PnP. The Huntshield and Plano PnP comes apart very easily, and doesn't hold up well. I've done the Plastidip thing to keep it together, alot of work for little gain.
My preference is solid foam, cut to fit a rifle, as it won't fall apart. Issue with that is that it makes the case rifle-specific. What i do now is put rifles in soft cases/drag bags and put those inside the Pelican hard cases when I need the extra protection. For range and lighter use the soft cases are lighter and more convenient.

I broke down and bought the hard case from Can tire a few months back. Got tired of trying to fit my 33 trainer and rifle into a standard 2 rifle case. Both have folding stocks, so fit easily into the case together. I have been impressed with it thus far.
The plucking was fairly easy and has held together well. You can also just remove the plucked part, and drop in any rifle, and still get good holding power. I want to say it was the huntshield one.

They are heavy tho, especially with two rifles.

I use the kolpin stronghold impact on the sxs and it has held up well over the 6 years use, and save my rifle from harm.

Weight isn't an issue as the case will be dragged from vehicle to vehicle. I have quality soft cases to use once at my destination.
Has anyone had issues storing their rifle in the case? Has their foam taken on moisture?

If your breaking a 1700 series Pelican case Im thinking nothing is going to suit your requirements. Theyre built as tough or more than anything Ive ever owned. I do own a Huntshield case from Crappy tire thats bounced around in the back of my truck and sidexside for a few years and so far no complaints and its been exposed to minus 25 or more on numerous occassioins.

Hard cases don't breathe, so I'd recommend using desiccant packs to avoid rust and mold.
