Hard cast 230 grn .45ACP lube??

I just got a mould for 230 grain round nose .452 bullets for .45ACP and was wondering if these need any lube in the bands or should I run them dry?
I also load .45 Colt using the same bullet and it doesn't seem to matter if I lube them or not...no leading in the barrel so far. Any ideas on this???
 
what type of mold is it? if it's by lee and the TL one (which i own) you simple use a liquid lube like lee liquid alox.

otherwise, not sure as i am new to the casting world.
 
You'll need one kind of lube or another. what kind you use is dependent on the bullet design. if its a bunch of small bands then its a tumble lube so alox is good. If its one large band then its likely designed for a hard lube.
 
Lee's Alox lube works fine on a .45acp - on bullets with single groove or multiple "tumble-lube" bands. Use very little - after drying, they may have not even a brown tint of colour to them, and still work great.
 
I am casting with a Lee TL 452-230-2R SKU# 90346 there are four small bands... round nose,they feed great in my 1911's and are accurate in my 1873 SAA .45 Colt. I have on hand some SPG Bullet lube which is kind of thick but may be better than nothing. Thanks for the info.
 
The TL means tumble lube but whatever. If you are shooting them now with no lube and they are accurate and do not lead the bore, exactly what more would you want? SPG is Steve Pete Garvey I think and that lube is specifically made for the old 45-70's and such. That being said it may well work for any lubing you require.
 
If you are using Tumble Lube bullets, then you need to use Lee Liquid Alox. The other stuff won't work. Mostly because you won't be able to apply them and have them stick.
The SPG lube is designed for blackpowder loads, but I understand that it works perfectly fine with smokeless loads as well. It is unlikely that it would work in TL bullets either, due to retention.
I don't know how you are getting by with .45 Colt loads without leading, unless you are loading so far down you can see the bullet flying through the air.
I would recommend you get some Lee Liquid Alox, or the equivalent from Dragon Lube and use it.
 
I find the liquid alox works fine with non tumble lube bullets as well. SPG works just fine for low power smokeless loads too. Just that the tumble lube is so much quicker, but then again it don't look so pretty.
