I'm looking at getting an AIRLINER BAGGAGE HANDLER GRADE hard gun case, to take my rifle(s) to Newfoundland, for upcoming Caribou hunt.

I'm kinda leaning to getting a double rifle case, as in 2 rifles.

Pelican Vault 800 looks damn decent but is there alternatives that are just as good, at slightly less cost?
 
I would really consider what you’re protecting and the cost of damage and a ruined hunt if the baggage team is hard on your gun.
A good pelican 1750 or 1720 (not the lighter version) is worth the investment in my opinion.

Crappy pic, but here is a nice stag I saw on NL while over moose hunting. No tag. :(

One shred of advice I would offer is to take with you some sort of shooting sticks rest. Lots of spots are wide wide open with nothing but low scrub to rest a rifle on and get a proper shot.

trust me handler at airports can make a lot of efforts to test the grade ... the only way i found is using an hard case then a soft case like the one used for carp fishing and inside the hard case some bubble wrap to protect the rifle and scope ...
 
If you are near a princess auto store, they have few rifle hard cases. I can’t see a difference from cabelas or others make as I have a few makes
 
Ok so here's a question about locks:
What type locks am I allowed to put on the gun case?
I was thinkin' I was just going to use your basic keyed lock?

Ever since I've gotten Pelican cases I've been thoroughly impressed and I think if you can swing it you won't be dissapointed! Sure you can get cheaper cases that are decent but I would trust a good pelican case with my expensive gear. Especially if it was going on an airplane where it will likely get tossed around. Canadian Tire also sells the V800 for a little less than $400 and those are great cases as well.

Amazon has a brand with wheels theyre about 180 bucks. Said to be airline approved. Can't think of the exact name but it started with m

Any kind of padlock will do but you will have to open them and let the agent inspect them thoroughly and then u can lock them again.

Another, sometimes cheaper, option is to ship them with insurance ahead of your trip. Your host can inspect them before u leave home.

I have done both.
 
So I have to take the wife to the airport Monday, I guess what I'll do is I quiz up the people at Air Canada and try to get the right answers.
Ya never know how differently the next agent might interpret the baggage rules, locks n such... but hopefully I'll get the answers I want.
 
nanuk 995 - huge (55") and heavy, but... fits two long guns easily and can survive a severe beating. My advice would be that this is not an item to be bought when needed, rather, long in advance. Sales are significant (ie on sale $370 vs $530 on amazon right now). black friday and xmas and fiscal-year-end is coming... if money is no object, then I suggest magpul daka grid/blocks for the inside (42" plano box set + extra bottom panel to make the full length and whatever other blocks you fancy). rock solid to travel wherever on whatever transport.

Great question. I started a thread previously and got answers for both TSA and non TSA locks.

I quizzed the CATSA SDM as I passed through an airport last week and they stated I should use TSA locks but she seemed kinda clueless.

TSA locks mean security can open it without cutting anything but some say that security should never be opening it unless you are present (so non TSA makes more sense). I will be flying with firearms next week and plan to take TSA and non TSA locks and fit whatever I am advised on the day.
