Depends on what the case is for.
To put the rifle in the car trunk and drive to the range, the $18 Crappy Tire case will work.
To ship the rifle in the baggage hold for the hunt/competition of a lifetime, that is another issue. I have been involved with many rifle teams flying all over the world. Too many rifle stocks were broken at the wrist.
As a laod sit on the case, it flexes and this breask the stock. the easy solution is to remove the barreld action and pack the stock side by side withthe action. The barrel won't flex and this protects the stock. Also, since the unit is shorter, there is less torque.
For one team I arranged the big Pelican cases for the rifles. These prevented breakage, but they are heavy. we had a deal for free rifle shipping, so weight was not an issue. I don't know the retail cost of a Pelican, but it is not cheap. But the cost of losing the use of a special target rifle at a competition is much higher.
