could someone please recomend a good hard gun case for a LTR or SPS rifle with 20in barrel. the over all length is about 44inches. I am hoping not to spend over $250 but I guess that will depend whats out there. the cheaper the better.

cheers,
Justin

also if anyone has pics that is even better.

Depends on what the case is for.

To put the rifle in the car trunk and drive to the range, the $18 Crappy Tire case will work.

To ship the rifle in the baggage hold for the hunt/competition of a lifetime, that is another issue. I have been involved with many rifle teams flying all over the world. Too many rifle stocks were broken at the wrist.

As a laod sit on the case, it flexes and this breask the stock. the easy solution is to remove the barreld action and pack the stock side by side withthe action. The barrel won't flex and this protects the stock. Also, since the unit is shorter, there is less torque.

For one team I arranged the big Pelican cases for the rifles. These prevented breakage, but they are heavy. we had a deal for free rifle shipping, so weight was not an issue. I don't know the retail cost of a Pelican, but it is not cheap. But the cost of losing the use of a special target rifle at a competition is much higher.

Pelican case are very good. I use a Starlight case (short version 38" long). I am not sure how much is the long version now. I bought it 2 years ago from underwaterkineticscanada.com in Edmonton. The price was very reasonable - I think it was less than $200. Give them a shout.
Both Pelican and Starlight case can take a lot of abuse.

Hard Case

I have a couple of the Starlight cases and they are a strong case. So is the Pelican. My Starlight case is hard to close at times and the latches are very hard to close. The Pelican case has an easier to open and close latch. However the best hard case in my mind is the the Storm Case. The Storm Case has a super easy to open and close latch. Much better than the Pelican Cases. The way the storm case seals for under water use also makes the case close trouble free. Go to iMcases.com to review the cases. Also Pelican Produsts acquired Hardigg Cases who makes the Storm Cases. If I were to start over or need another hard case, it would be a Storm Case based on what I know now.

Hardigg Cases

Starlight, Pelican, Hardigg, SKB you can't go wrong.

My only complaint with my SKB case is the latches. They are flat instead of hooked so if you pry them with a tool, they will undo. Mine has survived a few airline flights though.
